High school football has started in many counties in the state of Florida. In Pinellas County, one of the many rivalries is going to kick off on Friday night. The two teams that will meet in the Largo High School Packers vs the Pinellas Park High School Patriots. The Packers and Patriots have had so great games in the past, and in times when schools do not like each other. The two schools are close to each other in Pinellas County. Both the Packers and Patriots made the playoffs last year. The two teams met last year, and Largo beat Pinellas Park by three points, 20-17. This will be the third time in the last few years these two teams have met to open their respective seasons. Let’s look back at how these two teams did last year.
The Largo Packers started last year off on a high note, winning their first four games. The first two wins were close games. Beating the Pinellas Park Patriots by three points and then the following week winning by two points over the Lakewood Spartans. In the next two games, Largo made it look easy, beating the Boca Ciega Pirates by 18 points and then following up with a 13-point win over the Osceola Warriors. Hopes were high, but it would come apart over the next three weeks. The Packers would fall in the next three games, starting with a five-point loss to the Clearwater Tornadoes, followed by one of their toughest losses by two points. The opponent was the Palm Harbor University Hurricanes which was a district game. The last loss was the St. Petersburg Green Devils, where they were blown out.
This left four regular-season games, and they got back on track with a win over the East Lake Eagles by four points, 21-17. The following week, they took care of the Northeast Vikings 33-27, which was the second-to-last win of the season. The following week was the toughest loss of the year, and a district game loss to Steinbrenner Warriors by one point, 7-6. The Warriors won the district, winning all their district games. The Packers started their playoff appearance with a win over the Palmetto Tigers, who went 10-2, and that was just their second loss of the season. The Packers moved on to the second round after beating the Tigers 28-24, and then their season would come to an end versus the Wiregrass Ranch Bulls, falling 38-7.
The Pinellas Park Patriots fell to the Largo Packers, and that did not derail them because after that, the Patriots went on a four-game winning streak. The first win was against the East Lake Eagles 39-7. The following week, the team traveled to Naples to play the Golden Gate Titans, and the game was dominated by the Patriots, winning 45-0. The next two weeks were against teams from St. Petersburg, beating both the Lakewood Spartans and Gibbs Gladiators. The next game would be a district game, and this would be the team that, no matter what, Pinellas Park struggled against. The Manatee Hurricanes beat the Patriots 34-10. That would leave four games, and the Patriots would go 3-1.
The first would come with a win over the Tarpon Spring Spongers 34-21, and the last regular-season loss would come versus the Northeast Vikings 28-10. The last two games would end with the same final score, 49-13, with wins over the Osceola Warriors and Braden River Pirates. The Pirates were in a district game, which led to a rematch with the Manatee Hurricanes, and once again they lost 55-26. The Patriots will look to finally try and get over the hump versus the Packers because in the previous two years, Largo has won. The Kickoff will take place at Pinellas Park High School, and the game will start at 7:30 PM.
