Football is almost back as we draw closer and closer to August. Fans love it, as high school will start on Friday nights. College football is spread throughout the week, depending on which conference they watch. The NFL is the same; it’s about all week except for Tuesday and Wednesday. Speaking of one of the college teams that starts in a month, the University of South Florida Bulls. They open the season on Thursday, August 28th, versus the Boise State Broncos. This will be the third year under head coach Alex Golesh. In each of his first two seasons, the Bulls won six regular-season games that resulted in bowl appearances. In both of those bowl appearances, they won. Coming into year three, the fans want to see USF win more and possibly win a conference championship.
The Bulls saw 15 players appear on the newly named American Conference preseason all-conference list compiled by Athlon Sports. Let’s start with the fourth team and move up. The first USF Bull is DL Dre Bulter. Bulter is a transfer to USF from the Charlotte 49ers. He played 11 games with six starts and totaled 30 tackles, five of those for loss, two of those that caused a fumble. Bulter will be playing for his sixth team starting in 2019. The next player is on the defensive line with Butler in Josh Celiscar. Celiscar is like Butler; he is a transfer from UCF and Texas A&M. In 51 career games, four seasons with the UCF Knights before he transferred to the Texas A&M Aggies. He comes to USF with 156 total tackles, 24.5 for loss, eight sacks, and five forced fumbles.
The last member of the fourth team is OF Derek Bowman. Bowman has been with the program since 2023. In 2024, he started in all 13 games; he was the only player to start all 13 games. This was vital as he helped the running game score 34 touchdowns, which is the second most in program history. The Bulls had 2,343 yards, averaging 190.6 yards per game. The ground game had four 300-yard rushing games, and three of the backs had at least 400 rushing yards and seven rushing touchdowns. The third team also had three members, the first in linebacker Jhalyn Shuler. This will be Shuler’s sixth season with the USF Bulls. He has started 23 games during the last two seasons, only missing three games due to injury. Shuler has posted 166 total tackles, 16.5 for loss, including 5.5 sacks.
Next up is DL Rico Watson III, who transferred from Robert Morris in 2023. Watson has two more years of eligibility to play for USF. So far, with Robert Morris,s he logged 91 tackles, 22.5 tackles for loss, and 11.5 sacks. He will be a big help on the defensive line. The last player is OL Cole Best, like Bowman, played in all 13 games with 10 starts and seven at the center position. He was part of the good offensive line that helped both the run and passing attacks. The second team has five members on it, and the first is kicker Nico Gramatica. Gramatica is the son of Martin Gramatica, who was a big influence on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers winning their first Super Bowl in 2002. He was the kicker who was brought in for long field goals. Gramatica went 3 for 5, all over 50 yards.
This was the first year for Nico. He will be a bigger part in 2025 for the special team’s unit. The next player is another offensive lineman, Zane Herring, who started eight games and was out five due to injury. Like Bowman and Best, he was a big part of the offensive line, and that will continue in 2025. Next up is Keshaun Singleton, ranked third on the team with 27 receptions, 408 yards, and three touchdowns. He was red-shirted in 2023 due to injury. We have a running back up next in Cartevious Norton, who is yet another transfer from the Charlotte 49ers. He played 12 games, totaling 129 carries for 525 rushing yards and seven rushing touchdowns. Norton will help with a rushing attack that was great last year. The last member is quarterback Bryum Brown. He only started five games after a leg injury versus Tulane.
Many thought he may have transferred, will he did not and will be the starting quarterback in 2025. Many are excited that he is back and looking for him in his junior year to continue to improve and lead the USF Bulls to more wins. There were two players that made the first team, the first is CB De’Shawn Rucker is another transfer that came over last season from the Tennessee Volunteers. He started 11 games and had 42 tackles, 36 solo, 2 tackles for loss, aeven quarterback hurries, and a forced fumble. The last player on the list is LB Mac Harris, who started all 13 games. He led the Bulls with a career best 82 tackles and the team with 12 for loss, four quarterback sacks, and two forced fumbles. He will be a staple this year in 2025. All these players are great for USF.
