NFL teams have gone through changes starting at top with ownership and then it trickles down to general manager and head coach. Just last month the Tampa Bay Buccaneers announced that they are inducting a new member to their Ring of Honor. That member is Simeon Rice but now they have offered contract extensions to both general manager Jason Licht and head coach Todd Bowles. Licht has been with the Buccaneers since 2014. Bowles has been with the team and became the head coach in 2022 after serving as a defensive coordinator for three seasons. For five straight seasons the Bucs have ended their seasons with a playoff berth. In 2020 Licht pulled off a great move bringing the future Hall of Famer Tom Brady to Tampa. Brady would lead the Buccaneers to their second appearance in the Super Bowl and another championship.
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have only been in the Super Bowl twice and have won both times. In fact, they were the first team to host a Super Bowl and win it. Licht leads the pros with draft picks taking the most snaps in players he has drafted in rounds one through five. Many fans think that Todd Bowles is in the hot seat, but Tampa Bay has won the divisional title in the last four years. Ownership and Co-Chairman Joel Glazer says that Licht has been one of the best general managers in the league. He has taken many draft picks and turns them into many players that has made the team. All general managers have made mistakes, but most have made more than Licht has. Bowles had a head coaching job prior to taking over for the Buccaneers he was with the New York Jets.
Under the past five seasons the Tampa Bay Buccaneers have tallied 57 overall wins and 51 regular season wins. This has brought the Buccaneers out of the dark days they were in from the early 2000s. Tampa Bay has been the only NFL team to make the postseason in the last five years. They join the Buffalo Bills and Kansas City Chiefs that also have playoff experience. Licht picks since 2019 he drafted 38 players through rounds one through six all made or were on NFL rosters in the 2024 season. No other team in the NFL can claim a 100% success rate. Of the 50 players that started a game for Tampa Bay in the past two division-winning seasons, 40 of them were drafted or signed as undrafted rookies. Bowles after helping head coach Bruce Arians win the Super Bowl in 2022, he took over the position.
Since he took over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers have won 27 regular seasons games, the second most in his first three seasons in franchise history. He only trails Arians wo won 31 games which Bowles should pass in the 2025 season. At the end of the day both gentlemen deserve their extensions. Unless something goes south both will be here for the foreseeable future. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have great ownership starting with the Glazers and they have the right people in the right positions that put the team on a successful path. The 2025 Buccaneers could be one that contends for another division title and another Super Bowl.
