On Saturday afternoon at LeLacheur Park, it was Senior Day for 12 members of the UMass Lowell baseball team. They were hoping to go out in style against a Boston College Eagles team that came to Lowell with a lot to play for, as well as starting a five-game season ending road trip. BC (24-26) wiped out a 3-0 deficit with a five run fourth to take Game 1, of this brief two-game set by the score of 8-3.
Both teams went with their Friday starters for this one. For the River Hawks Alfred Mucciarone (1-6) got the baseball from head coach Nick Barese. BC Head coach, Todd Interdonato, went with AJ Colarusso. The River Hawks would strike first with a 3-run third inning and all the runs came in on clutch two-out hits. Alex Luccini drove home the first two on a single to center field. He would score when next man up Carlos Martinez tripled to right field. Just like that, it was 3-0 UML.
Mucciarone went through the Eagles batting order retiring all nine batters he faced. He got some help after a leadoff walk to Josiah Ragsdale who then was thrown out trying to steal in the first inning. The second time through the order was a different story. BC would bat around, scoring five runs in the fourth. Barese thought “it was one bad pitch.” That pitch resulted in a grand slam home run to left center field off the bat of Kyle Wolff (2,-5, 1 RS, 4 RBI), his 7th of the year. He now has 42 RBI on the season. Eagles SS Sam McNulty would add the fifth run of the inning on a single to center field. It was 5-3 BC after four innings.
Boston College would use the long ball to add to their scoring. In the fifth of Brian Foley of UML, Jack Toomey would hit a 2-run HR to right field that would score Patrick Roache in front of him. The home run was his fifth of the year. 7-3 Boston College after five frames. In the eighth, off of Miles Cota, Vinnie Cimini hit his 4th of the season to left field to finish the scoring at 8-3 Boston College.
Colarusso did not pick up the win because he only went four innings (3 ER, 5 H, 1 BB, 3 SO), but he was picked up by the combination of JD Ogden (4-2) who got the win by going four innings of 1 hit, 2 walks, and 2 strikeout baseball, and Joey Ryan pitched a scoreless ninth.
The Eagles have now made it three straight wins over UMass Lowell this season, with one more to play on Sunday. The River Hawks will go into that game trying to snap a five-game losing streak. To make matters worse, they find themselves in last place in America East based on a doubleheader sweep by UAlbany over UMBC.
On Sunday, it will be the final home game of the season for UML. First pitch is set for 2 PM against Boston College.
