With two weekends left in the ACC season, series are still very important. But this weekend, four teams will not be playing league baseball. Boston College, Notre Dame, Stanford, and Virginia are all playing non-league series that could help or hurt their resumes. With 16 teams in the league, it may be time to figure out how everyone can play league games, which at this point is more important.
Five teams are in the D1 Baseball ranking with Florida State at #2, North Carolina Tar Heels at #4, Clemson at #9, North Carolina State at #16, and Louisville at #20. In the RPI rankings, 13 teams are ranked inside the top 25. Three are in the top 10. Florida State at #7, Clemson at #9, UNC at #10. 11 teams are ranked in the Diamond Sports Ranking, seven in the top 25. UNC is at #7, FSU at #8, Clemson at #10, Duke at #14, Miami at #18, Georgia Tech at #19, and NC State at #25.
There are some big weekend series going on in the league this weekend. The Seminoles will travel to Berkeley and meet up with Cal-Berkeley starting Friday night. #16 NC State heads on the road at #4 Tar Heels. Both teams are in the top 5 in the league standings, and this could be a crucial series for both. Another big series is Georgia Tech at Louisville. The Yellow Jackets are still trying to make some noise in this league.
Duke heads to Clemson, a team trending in the wrong direction of late. A tough series at Florida State was followed by a mid-week loss to #18 Coastal Carolina on the road. They need to regroup now with Louisville on the way. The Blue Devils are red hot, having won 9-of-10. Clemson has lost 4-of-5 all on the road. For now, the Tigers are alright for the tournament, but could be in danger of not being a regional host. The good news for Clemson fans is the Tigers are 25-5 at home.
Florida State makes its first-ever trip to Berkeley this weekend. The Seminoles are 10-5 on the road this season. This could be a trap series for FSU, with UNC coming to Tallahassee next weekend. The Golden Bears are just 9-15 at home this year and 6-18 in their first year in the league.
This week’s ACC Player and Pitcher of the Week come from Miami. The player is Daniel Cuvet, who hit .833 (5-for-6) in two games vs the Wolfpack. On Saturday, he went 6.2 IP, allowing five hits and an unearned run. He also struck out six.
