While the college basketball season is a long way off, schedules for next season are being finalized as we speak. That includes in-season tournaments that are part of the early-season slate. The Boston College Eagles, out of the ACC, are one of those schools with an in-season tournament on their calendar for next year.
The event is called the Shriners Children’s Charleston Classic. It will be played on November 21 and 23 at TD Arena in Charleston, South Carolina, and will feature two four-team brackets. The Eagles will have Davidson. Tulane and Utah State in their group. Davidson, out of the A-10, will be making their fifth appearance in this event. Tulane, out of the AAC, finished last season at 19-15 overall and 12-6 in their league. Utah State, out of the Mountain West Conference, finished last season at 26-8 and received a berth in the NCAA Basketball Tournament as a #10 seed.
For the Eagles, this will be their second trip ever to this tournament. The last time for BC was in 2012 when they faced Baylor, Dayton, and the host school, College of Charleston. For BC’s head coach, Earl Grant, this will be his second time in this event. Last time was in 2016 while coaching the Cougars. He faced Boise State, the University of Central Florida, and Dayton.
This will be the 17th year of this tournament. Eagles’ head coach said the school “is really excited to be at this event.” He believes, “It is good to get an early-season challenge.” We mention that there are two brackets in this tournament. In the other bracket, we have another ACC team. The Clemson Tigers are making their fifth trip to this tournament and will be in the same group as Georgia, West Virginia, and Xavier.
This will be the first time that two separate brackets will be used. The Bracket that BC is in will be called the LowCountry Bracket, while the other bracket will be called the Palmetto Bracket. All teams will play two games, with one on the 21st and their second game on November 23. The Clemson Tigers have had good success in this tournament, winning it in 2008. They also have runners up finishes in both 2013 and 2017.
