The defending champions, the Bryant University Bulldogs, are playing their best baseball of the spring. After sweeping UAlbany last weekend, the Bulldogs find themselves back in first place in the conference with three weeks left. Bryant has won five in a row and 12 of their last 13 games as they get ready for a first-place showdown with the Maine Black Bears that will take place in Smithfield, RI.
The Bulldogs (23-16-1) took care of business on the road vs the Great Danes, scoring 29 runs in the three baseball games played. AE Player of the Week Zac Zyons had a big week for Bryant, hitting .375 and having an OPS of 1.507. On Sunday, he went 3-for-3 with two home runs and five RBI in a 17-4 rout of the Great Danes. In the series vs UAlbany, Zyons went 5-for-12 with three HRs and seven RBI. Zyons would keep that up on Wednesday afternoon as he went 3-for-6, HR, 1 RS, 1 RBI in a 12-3 win over Stonehill on the road. He got help from Gavin Noriega, who had a three-hit game, and Drew Wyers, who had a four-hit game with three RBI. The Bulldogs used seven pitchers to get the win over the Skyhawks.
The Black Bears (19-22, 12-6) are just a game back in the loss column heading into the weekend series. Last weekend at home, Maine took two of three from NJIT, whose late-season road trip has gotten off to a rough start. Maine has won three in a row, including a big non-conference win on the road at Boston College on Wednesday afternoon by a 5-4 score in 10 innings. AE Pitcher of the Week Caleb Leys threw a complete game 7-inning shutout on Friday vs the Highlanders. He gave up five hits, two walks, and had five strikeouts. Heading into the weekend, Leys leads the league in wins with five, ERA at 0.51, and strikeouts with 45. Tommy Martin was this week’s AE Rookie of the Week. Coming out of the Black Bears’ bullpen, Martin threw three scoreless innings of relief to earn his first save.
Another big series is at the bottom of the standings, finds the UMass Lowell River Hawks play host to UAlbany. The River Hawks (17-26, 8-10) are coming off taking two of three from Binghamton at LeLacheur Park last weekend. All three River Hawks starters, Alfred Mucciarone, Brendan Holland, and Nick DiRito, all threw over 100 pitches in their starts. The River Hawks are on an eight-game home stand, and they are 3-1 so far. The Great Danes (13-27, 3-12) are on a four-game losing streak and are 9-15 on the road. This will be the first and only time these two will meet in the regular season. For the Great Danes, this might be the last call for them. They need to win this series to have any hopes of getting to the postseason.
The other series has NJIT (20-21, 8-7) at UMBC (17-19, 7-8). UMBC played non-league baseball last weekend, taking two of three from Manhattan while the Highlanders were in Maine. UMBC has nine conference games remaining on the schedule, with six of them at home. NJIT also has nine left, however, six of them are on the road.
Binghamton has the weekend off from league play, they are heading to play Navy on the road.
