While it may be cold and swoney outside for some, college baseball is right around the corner. In fact, in two weeks the “Road to the Conference Tournament ” begins. The Atlantic Coast Conference recently had their coaches make their preseason picks for the team to beat in the league and the Virginia Cavaliers were the winners. Let’s take a look at how the league coaches made their picks.
Coming off a 2024 season that saw the Cavaliers make it to Omaha, Virginia received 13 of 16 possible first-place votes. Virginia got 251 points on their way to being named the preseason favorite. They are also ranked second in the preseason D1 Baseball Preseason Poll. That is their highest ranking from that poll in program history.
Two other schools that made it to the College World Series also received first-place votes. The Florida State Seminoles were named on two ballots while the North Carolina Tar Heels, though not on any first-place ballots, did get plenty of points. The Seminoles finished second in the voting and got 230 points. The Tar Heels finished third and earned 217 points.
The Clemson Tigers took the other first-place vote and 214 points. They were picked to finish fourth this spring. Last spring’s champions, the Duke Blue Devils have been picked to finish fifth with 182 points. Wake Forest took the sixth spot with 171 points. North Carolina State, which also made the College World Series last June, is seventh with 168 points. The rest of the top 10 has Stanford at #11 with 143 points. The Cardinals are looking to make it four trips in the last five years to the tournament. Louisville is at #9 with 128 points and they are trying to get back to the field for the first time since 2022. Georgia Tech is in tenth place with 113 points and is trying to make it back-to-back years in the field of 64.
Miami is #11 (87 points), Virginia Tech is at #12 (85 points), California at #13 (60 points), Pittsburgh at #14 (52 points), Notre Dame at #15 (44 points) and Boston College at #16 (31 points). Besides Virginia, six other ACC schools are ranked in the D1 Baseball preseason poll. UNC at #6, Florida State at #9, Duke at #11, NC State at #13, Wake Forest at #14, Clemson at #15. D1 baseball also announced their first team selections and 10 from the league made the first team while 17 conference student-athletes were named Preseason All-Americans.
Everybody will begin their seasons on Friday, February 14. League play gets underway on Friday, March 7. The ACC Baseball Conference Tournament runs from May 20-25 at Durham Bulls Athletic Park in Durham, NC.
