The Pittsburgh SportsNation Game Commentary
There are moments when a rival catches you sleeping. A night where you play nowhere near the level you are capable of.
You lose a game when you have no one but yourself to blame.
The next day, your head is spinning, with your stomach churning, and your emotions ranging from anger to disbelief.
Two weeks ago, that pretty much describes every coach and player on the Pittsburgh Steelers, after they left Cleveland with a stunning 24-19 defeat on a cold and snowy night, to a then 2-8 Browns team.
“I think it’s just the intimacy of this match-up, divisional opponents, and we knew that we were gonna get their best,” said Steelers left tackle Dan Moore Jr., in the locker-room after the 24-19 loss Cleveland. “They didn’t get ours.”
Steelers wide receiver George Pickens wasn’t shy in his assessment of the last game either.
“It’s really the conditions that played a huge factor in today’s game,” said Pickens. “The conditions and ‘away game’ refs. We’ll just keep grinding. Conditions played a huge, huge part in today’s game. I don’t really think the Cleveland Browns are a good team at all. I think the conditions kind of saved them today.”
If the Steelers (9-3) are hell bent on revenge, they won’t have to wait long to unleash it upon Cleveland (3-9), who travel to the Steel City this Sunday afternoon at Acrisure Stadium. Kickoff is at 1:00 PM.
This time around, the weather won’t be much of a factor, outside of some gusty winds. After a bit of a cold spell, it’s expected to be around 50 degrees come kickoff.
Unlike last time, Pittsburgh will enter this game injury free, as they will get linebacker Alex Highsmith back after missing the last four games, as well as corner Cory Trice, and wide receiver Calvin Austin III, who is out of the concussion protocol.
Adding Highsmith back into the fold, along with fellow pass rushers T.J. Watt, Nick Herbig, and Preston Smith, is something that has Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin smiling as the final month of the regular season begins.
“You can’t run out of rush men, particularly in December,” Tomlin said. “So it’s exciting. Make no mistake, there’s enough work for all parties involved and we’re excited about sorting that out as we prepare.”
Those linebackers will be doing their best to chase down Cleveland quarterback Jameis Winston every time he drops back to pass on Sunday.
“He’s got unbelievable arm talent,” said Tomlin in regards to Winston. “He was the first pick in the draft. And you’re not the first pick in the draft for no reason, man. He’s got arm strength. He’s got accuracy. He’s got trajectory. He can place the ball just about anywhere on the field.
“He’s a big-time competitor, to boot. He never turns down competition. You know, he’s going to fight to win possession downs and things of that nature. Man, we got to do a really good job of matching that competitive spirit, making our plays, knowing that there’s a potential that could give some up when a guy comes at you the way he does and with the with the amount of weaponry that he has at his disposal.”
Winston’s top receiver has become Jerry Jeudy, who is now tied for 5th in the league with 880 yards receiving, off of 54 receptions. Jeudy is averaging 16.3 yards a catch, and is coming off a game where he torched the Denver Broncos for 235 yards and a touchdown.
Elijah Moore and Cedric Tillman become major factors under Winston. Moore is 2nd on the team with 50 catches, while Tillman has 29 receptions for 339 yards and three touchdowns, despite missing the last game, and is out again on Sunday.
Tight end David Njoku is living up to talents, 3rd on the team with 49 catches for 397 yards and a team leading four touchdown receptions.
Jerome Ford is the team leader in rushing with 339 yards, as the Browns wait for Nick Chubb to regain his form after his horrific injury suffered last year against Pittsburgh. Chubb gained just 21 yards on nine carries last week after putting up 59 yards and two touchdowns when these teams last met on that snowy night.
After their 44-38 shootout victory over the Bengals last week, the Pittsburgh offense is primed to do it again if need be, as the Browns put up 552 yards of total offense before losing to Denver 41-32 on Monday night.
“The thing that we have to focus on is us and what we do really well,” said Steelers quarterback Russell Wilson. “Obviously, our ability to run the football and run downhill, our ability to play-action, our ability to get the ball on the edge, our ability to get the ball out quick, too — I think we’ve done that really well this year, and guys are making really great plays in that game. Our focus is always on our versatility in how our offense is.”
Count Tomlin in for wanting his team playing a much lower scoring affair.
“I don’t know that I’m ever comfortable playing in a shootout,” Tomlin said. “It’s just my background and expertise. I have certain expectations because of my professional journey on defense that I expect us to slow those things down and minimize some of that.”
Wilson is ready to do whatever it takes to lead his team to their 10th win and extinguish the bitterness felt from the loss to Cleveland last time out.
“The biggest thing is, you play the next play. I never really focus on yards. I just focus on winning. All I care about is winning, what we do and how we do it and how we get there,” Wilson said. “Obviously, when guys are making plays like that, it gives you a better chance to win. Whatever we’ve got to do every day to be our best and help this team win, that’s all I focus on every day. It’s not the personal side of it and what we were able to accomplish.
“I’ve been able to accomplish a lot of great things along the way, but the only thing I’m occupied with and focused on is us accomplishing our ultimate goal — and that’s winning another Super Bowl.”
Entering this game, the Pittsburgh offense is now ranked 10th in the league, scoring 24.7 points a game.
“All of us are clicking at the same time,” left tackle Broderick Jones said. “As long as our offense is clicking, all 11 of us firing off the ball and doing what we do, being on the same page, I don’t really feel like there’s anybody who can stop us.”
This Sunday, Pittsburgh should look like the team that currently leads the AFC North, and extend their lead over the Baltimore Ravens afterwards. What more can you ask for, than a two game lead with four left after this week, especially with games against the Eagles, Ravens, Chiefs, and the Bengals to finish the season?
In terms of ‘must-win’, this game almost certainly qualifies, and the Steelers haven’t dropped three straight to Cleveland since the late 1980’s.
Wilson should be primed to have another big game with Pickens and tight end Pat Freiermuth making splash plays downfield. Austin III has become a factor this season along with Darnell Washington catching those swing plays out of the backfield.
God be with any corner staring down “Mount” Washington barreling towards him at full speed with the ball in his hands.
Najee Harris and Jaylen Warren should be hungry to chew up a Browns defense allowing 128.6 yards a game on the ground.
Offensively, this game will be about physicality in the trenches, especially the offensive line keeping the Browns Myles Garrett from getting to Wilson, and opening up holes for Harris and Warren to exploit.
Time of possession, limiting stupid penalties, and not turning over the ball are also key to this game, in addition to finding the end zone as they did so often against Cincinnati last week.
On defense, pressuring Winston is a must, as he is prone to bad throws that result in game changing interceptions when he is uncomfortable in the pocket.
It’s doubtful the Browns will find success running the ball this week, so expect to see Winston trying to win this game with his arm.
Watt, who didn’t record a sack last time, should be beyond eager to make this game personal, especially after Garrett’s comments following the Brown’s win.
“You can’t give a guy like that hope because he’s going to keep fighting. He’s going to keep swinging. Whether he’s down or whether he’s up, he’s going to try to knock you out,” said Steelers free safety Minkah Fitzpatrick. “The major key is to knock him out early, get the ball off him early and try to get them to force the run game as opposed to explosive passes over the top.”
In other words, the Steeler defense is coming after Winston.
This week, play time is over. It’s time to eat, and the Browns are a nice juicy ribeye steak sitting on the plate in front of an angry and motivated Steelers team.
In front of a rabid SteelerNation crowd, and on a day where the Steelers Hall of Honor will be inducting linebacker Jason Gildon, nose tackle Casey Hampton, running back Willie Parker, and defensive coordinator Dick LeBeau, Pittsburgh will be primed to bury the Browns from start to finish, and start preparations for a possible Super Bowl preview a week later against Philadelphia.
