Week 13 in the NFL did not bring us many surprises and the teams expected to win did just that. The AFC and NFC East are all but settled but there are battles for division titles still looming.
Pittsburgh 44 Cincinnati 38
Say what you want about Mike Tomlin but the man just keeps winning. In a back-and-forth affair, the Steelers came out the victor behind Russel Wilson’s big day., The veteran QB was 29-38 for 414 yards, three touchdowns and a pick-six. Wilson used 10 receivers, four with more than 50 yards receiving, to will the Stellers to their ninth win of the year. With the win, Pittsburgh holds on to first place in the AFC North.
You play the game to win and head coach Mike Tomlihn personifies that. With the win, he secures his 18th consecutive season with a winning record extending his record to start a career. 15 of those have been winning seasons, and the team has made the playoffs in 11 of those years. Seven have resulted in an AFC North title, and two led to the AFC Championship. The other season? Well, that was his Super Bowl winning season.
Buffalo 35 San Francisco 10
Ever wonder if playing in the sun and playing in the snow made any difference? Well, Sunday Night Football showed us just that when the Bills of Buffalo used their home environment to manhandle the 49ers of San Francisco. On a snowy night, after a few snowy nights that saw tons of snow, Josh Allen continued to make his case for NFL MVP with an efficient performance where he finished 13-17 for 148 yards and two touchdowns. He added a touchdown rushing and one receiving on a crazy play. With that, he became the first QB ever to record a touchdown passing, receiving, and rushing in the same game. James Cook took advantage of the slippery turf with 14 carries for 107 yards and a touchdown of his own.
Another effect of being a West Coast team playing in these conditions? Three fumbles, all lost. The loss is just another step back for a 49ers team expected to be better than they have been this year.
Philadelphia 24 Baltimore 19
Football is a game of inches and field position and the team that wins these battles usually wins the game. In the case of the Baltimore Ravens, field position put them in position with one of the better kickers in the league, Justin Tucker. Except this has not been one of those years for Tuvker and yesterday was another disaster as he missed two field goals and an extra point that cost his team big time.
The Eagles won the game of inches with their defense that did not allow any second-half points till the final seconds of the game. Saquon Barkley continued to make his case for NFL MVP rushing for 107 yards and a touchdown. Barkley now has 1499 yards and needs 606 yards in the final five games if he hopes to break Eric Dickerson’s 40-year-old rushing record of 2,105 yards in a single season. With the win, the Eagles are one game closer to locking up the NFC East.
