It was a solid first month for the Boston College football team. A 4-1 overall record, and a conference win among them. Now we turn the page to the month of October, where the Eagles will play three league games with the first two on the road. First up is a trip to Virginia to meet the Cavaliers (3-1, 1-0).

Before we look ahead, let’s take a step back and revisit last Saturday’s game with Western Kentucky. Before that game got started, there was news on the Eagles front. Starting QB Thomas Castellanos would miss the game with an injury and backup quarterback Grayson James made his first start for BC. The transfer from FIU was making his 12th overall start at the college level. He acquitted himself well after getting off to a bit of a slow start. His final numbers (19-of-32, 168 yards, TD, 0 INT) were good. He also ran the ball six times for 19 yards, including a 1-yard run early in the fourth quarter that brought the Eagles back to within a one-score game with the Hilltoppers. Then, with three and a half minutes left, he hit Jerand Bradley for the game-winning 8-yard TD pass to give the Eagles the 21-20 victory. A second plus was the return of RB Kyle Robichaux (18 carries, 81 yards, TD)

On the defensive side, DE Donovan Ezeiruaku had a monster game with 10 solo tackles, 4 assists, 4 for losses, and 3 sacks. The third sack was the most important as it was a strip sack that led to the game-winning score. His performance earned him ACC Defensive Lineman of the Week. LB Kam Arnold had 11 total tackles, (5 solo, 6 assists) he also had an interception. For the game, the Eagles defense gave up 355 yards on 78 plays. Both the yardages and number of plays were more than the Eagles offense could muster (279, 67).

The bad news from last Saturday’s game was the slow start by the team. Head coach Bill O’Brien is not very happy with the team not being ready to play from the opening kickoff. With seven games left in the season, things are still on the table to play for. This team needs to figure out how to get off to better starts.

The Eagles have had great success vs Virginia. The overall record is 7-1 and they are 2-1 in Charlottesville, winning there in both 2009, and 2017.  If Boston College can come up with the win on Saturday, they will improve to 5-1 for the first time since 2008. They would also be 2-0 in the league for the first time since 2007 and would have victories in their first two road games in the ACC for the first time since 2014.

Virginia is off to its best start since 2019 under third-year head coach Tony Elliot. In 2019 they were 4-0. The Cavaliers are coming off a bye week and are looking to go 2-0 in conference play for the first time since 2019. Through four games, the Cavaliers have been flagged only 17 times so far this season. They are tied with the Eagles for the fewest penalties in the league. Virginia’s running game will face an Eagles defense that is allowing only 101.4 yards on the ground. That is sixth-lowest in the league.  The offense is run by sophomore QB Thomas Colandrea who in four games has thrown for 1,032 yards on 84-of-123 passing, 7 TD, 4 INT. The defense is led by the preseason Senior Bowl and  Shrine Bowl watch list DE Chico Bennett (16 tackles, 7 solo, 9 assists, 3.5 for losses, 1 sack).

Boston College is looking to do in October what they did to start September. Win a league game on the road.
