CFB Playoffs: New 12-Team System Should Be Fun

The 2024 college football season is underway with Georgia Tech pulling off the first upset of the year in their win over Florida State.. With it, we get the new 12-team college football playoff system. A system designed to make the game more competitive. One that will make every game a must-win, basically. One that will finally give the little guy a chance to play for it all.

The one thing that will not change is the usual suspects making the playoffs. Add the champions from the AAC, Mountain West, Sun Belt, Mid-American, and Conference USA as teams with a good shot to make the playoffs.

This is going to make football in November playoff football. Once the conference season begins, teams can ill-afford to make any mistakes and lose ground in the 12-team chase. Teams sitting with two or even three losses will no longer be out of it at that time like they once were.

We could also see more than 20 teams still in the hunt in November. Teams that once knew their season was over early can now play to win knowing they finally have, at least, a shot at the playoffs.

Another great thing about this set-up is it gives us nationwide football instead of just the usual regional stuff with the teams that always win. It gives college football more of a national feel.

The TV money and media deals will be off the chain for sure. Then again, it’s always about the money. But finally, we will be able to complain about the money being made at the same time we celebrate this new system that is going to change college football as we know it.

Just like any year, there will be teams that are left out. The argument for who was left out will not change but you gotta feel better about how this may play out.

One thing is for sure, the game of college football is going to look so different. It is going to be played and coached differently too. Coaches are now going to have to make those late-season adjustments much earlier as well as the game plan for any playoff push. They will make the season adjustment of knowing the window of opportunity to the playoffs won’t close so quick with a couple of losses.

So strap on your helmets and get the popcorn ready. I got a feeling this is gonna be a college football season to remember.
