
It was not a great season for the Boston College Eagles on the diamond (22-31), but a couple of them heard their names called at the recent Major League Baseball Draft in Texas. Outfielder Cameron Leary, on the second day, and pitcher John West on the third day, were among those that an MLB organization drafted.
Cameron Leary was selected by the Oakland A’s with the 286th pick in the 10 round. He becomes the fourth member of the program to be taken by Oakland. He had a big offensive season for the Eagles in 2024 hitting .272 with 15 home runs and 48 RBI. His OPS was at 1.001 and he slugged .560 with an on-base percentage of .441. He also stole 23 bases in 25 attempts. He started every game for Boston College.
In his 184 total at-bats, Leary did not ground into a single double play. He had back-to-back Saturday walk-off HRs at home vs Florida State and Wake Forest. He had 14 multi-hit games In the field, Leary played all three outfield positions during the season. His fielding percentage was a perfect 1.000 with two outfield assists. He is the only Eagles in the record books to have at least 15 home runs and 20 steals in a single season. He is also the only BC player to have hit at least 40 HR and stolen 40 bases.
He ended his career at Boston College as the winner of the Franklin Hitter of the Year Award for 2024. He was also named to the ABCA-All-Northeast Second Team.
John West was the Friday starter for Boston College. The 374th pick in the 12th round by the Arizona Diamondbacks made a team-high 14 starts this past season. His record was 1-4 with 78 innings pitched and he allowed 91 hits with 66 strikeouts to 30 walks. He gave up 54 runs of which 47 were earned. Teams hit .267 against him. His ERA was 5.42 which was the best on the Eagles starting rotation. West did have a problem with both wild pitches, he allowed 12 and hit batsmen with 15. West earned third-team All-ACC as a senior. He ranked in the top 29 in ERA and strikeouts, and top-5 in starts, innings, and home runs per game. He is the fourth member of the program to be drafted by Arizona.
Keeping the Covid-shortened 2020 out of the picture, this marks the 10th straight year that Boston College has had at least one member of the team be drafted. Overall, the Eagles have had 94 players selected by an MLB team.
