Everything clicked for Texas Southern on Friday afternoon as they run-ruled Alcorn State 20-1 behind an eight-RBI outing from Nin Burns II.
With two outs in the first, Burns hit an inside-the-park home run to center which scored Jason Lazo and Jaden Jones. TSU tacked on two more in the second as CJ Castillo and Lazo drove in runs for a 5-0 margin. TSU broke the game open in the third as Jordan Vidato tripled in a run followed by Shannon Martin’s RBI single. ASU was forced to change pitchers but it didn’t slow the Tigers as Castillo drove in an RBI along with two consecutive runs scored via walks. The Braves went to the bullpen again as Jesse Herrera III had an RBI followed by a bases-loaded walk issued to Vidato.
ASU scored its lone run in the fourth as TSU added seven more runs in the fourth and fifth frames to secure the win. TSU also completed the rare triple play in the sixth to end ASU’s latest scoring threat.
Burns went 3-for-4 with eight RBI and two runs scored. Castillo finished 4-for-5 with two hits and two RBI while Lazo and Tyler Williams had multiple hits.
Domenic Martinez struck out six in five innings of action while allowing two hits.
Due to potential weather issues on Sunday, the series will feature a doubleheader on Saturday starting at 1 p.m.
