BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Texas Southern wasted no time in setting the tone as they extended its SWAC Tournament first-round streak to 14 straight wins after a dominant 73-62 win over Jackson State Thursday afternoon.
JSU led 2-0 at the 19:08 mark and that would be its last lead of the day as Grayson Carter answered with a three-pointer nearly a minute later. TSU shot lights out in the arena as they went on an 18-6 surge over the next seven minutes to lead 20-8 after PJ Henry’s three-pointer. JSU’s Coltie Young answered with a three-pointer on the ensuing possession but TSU remained red hot to close out the half as they shot 68 percent en route to a 46-27 halftime lead.
TSU led as much as 22 (60-38) with 11:14 remaining in the second half. JSU had a late run with a 17-6 run over the next seven minutes to get within 66-55 with 5:02 left but TSU withstood the surge and bumped it back to 16 en route to the win.
Jonathan Cisse led TSU with 24 points, eight rebounds and six assists while Henry added 19. Grayson Carter added 10 with eight rebounds.
TSU is back in action Friday night against Alabama A&M at 8:30 p.m.
