America East Basketball News & Notes: Good Times Keep Rolling

The second week of the college basketball season did not produce the kind of high-profile wins the first one did. It was still a good week of hoops for the America East Conference. Through two weeks of games, the league has a combined overall record of 31-27 with twenty more games on the schedule for this week. Six of the nine schools have records of at least .500. It has been a good start for the league as the month of December is just a few days away. Here is some more news on the league.

The Vermont Catamounts are off to a 5-2 start. As week three begins, the team is the best in assists/turnover ratio at 1.66 They have 108 assists to 65 turnovers. The assists total is also the best in the league. The team is averaging 15.40 assists a game. The Catamounts have shot the ball well through seven games. They are shooting 50.2% (202-of-404). They have the best Combined Opponent Rebounds at 214 in seven games for an average of 30.6 per game. Their shooting percentage is also #1 in the league. TJ Long is third in three-point makes at 2.3 a game (16 in seven games) and he is sixth in three-point FG percentage at .381%.

UNH forward Clarence Daniels averaged 21 points last week as the Wildcats (4-2) won both of their games vs Marist at home and then on the road at Fairfield. He is also tied for fifth in the country in double-doubles with two. UNH is ranked 50th in the nation in effective FG percentage of .579. The Wildcats have the best offense in AE. They are scoring at an 82-point clip per game and they are second in the league in steals with 52 in six games for an average of 8.57 per game. Daniels is leading the league in scoring at 20.8 points per game.

The UMass Lowell River Hawks (4-1) are finishing up a six-game road trip this week where they are 3-1 so far. The River Hawks are second in the league in blocked shots with 25 for an average of five per game. They are #1 in both combined team rebounds with 204 for an average of 40. They have the best rebounding margin at 8.6 a night. Their 3-point defense has been very good so far. They are #1 in the league .205% (24-for-117) in opponent 3-point FG percentage. Graduate guard Ayinde Hikim is second in the league in scoring at 20.2 a game. He has scored at least 15 points in all five games played by UMass Lowell. Max Brooks leads the conference in blocked shots with 2.2 a game (11 in five games).

UAlbany (3-3) got things going last week by winning both of their games. On Sunday, they took care of Siena University 86-51 behind a career-best 33 points from Amar Marshall. The Great Danes are the best offensive-rebounding team in the league averaging 12 a game (72 in six games). Jonathan Beegle is third in rebounding at 7.7 a game. He has 32 defensive boards and 14 on the offensive end. His teammate Amar Marshall is tenth at 6.2 a game (23 defensive, 12 offensive). Marshall was named AE Player of the Week for a league-best 23.5 points a game, eight rebounds, and three assists.

The Bryant Bulldogs (3-4) have the best rebounder in the league in Earl Timberlake (9.3 a game). He is #1 in assists to turnover ratio at 2.1 (32 assists to 15 turnovers). They also have the fourth-best rebounder in the league in Daniel Rivera (7.3 per game) while Shieff Gross-Bullock is third in the league in scoring averaging 18 a game. He is also averaging 3.1 3-point FG a game which is #1 in the league. It’s not surprising that Timberlake leads the league in minutes played at 34.5 in seven games. Gross-Bullock is fourth with 33.9 minutes a game.

NJIT guard Sebastian Robinson was the America East Rookie of the Week for the second week in a row. He averaged 18 points and 3.5 assists for the Highlanders last week. In their win over Delaware State, Robinson was the team’s leading scorer with 25 points.
