With the regular season now six days away, the Boston College football team will now end summer camp and begin to run their normal weekly schedule ahead of their games. Last week was their final summer workout week. They were able to get outside in full pads and fine-tune what needed to be done ahead of Saturday’s opener vs Northern Illinois. Emmett Morehead continues to look sharp and the QB has looked comfortable running the offense during camp. In the first session this past Tuesday, Morehead was distributing the football to different receivers on time. He would throw two touchdown passes to end his day.

Not to be outdone, the defense had its moments as well led by Alex Washington, who recorded the unit’s first pick of the day on a pass over the middle. Other members of the secondary also made fine plays during the 7-on-7 workout. Backup QB Thomas Castellanos had a great showing during red zone 7-on-7 throwing four touchdowns. Red zone offense will be a key for the Eagles this fall. The ability to score touchdowns in the ACC is a must. In general, the offense was on its game on Tuesday and it showed.

After a scheduled off-day Wednesday, the team came back out on Thursday in full pads once again. The offense picked up where they had left off on Tuesday moving the ball through the air and finding the endzone. That is not to say that the defense was not doing its job. In fact, they were. They spent the better part of the first morning session causing havoc in the Boston College backfield. On Wednesday, the ones on both sides were getting after it and it was good to see. What was also good to see was the continuing improvement in the red zone offense. Morehead and Castellanos are making plays with their arms. The offensive line is giving these guys time to make plays and is a welcome sight for the coaching staff to see.

If there was a by-product of last season’s struggles, it was that head coach Jeff Hadley had the opportunity to play a lot of people as the season wore on. While it can be said that the young members of last year’s team made mistakes. The experience they received should be very helpful this fall. Most of last year’s team has returned to the Heights. The reps and game action these young players received last season should be a big plus as week one nears. Another factor is some of the transfer players that have been brought in over the summer. The coaching staff looks for players who have the smarts to play Power-5 football. They believe that the players who have come on board fit that bill rather nicely. Having added coaches on the field that can also play will go a long way in helping Boston College to have a successful fall. However, saying it and proving it on the field can be two different things. The preseason ranking for this team is at #82, not a glowing endorsement by any means. This team, with four of their first five games at home, must get off to a good start to show the college football landscape that the Eagles are a tough young fast team with a bit of a chip on their shoulders.
