Under a cloudy sky that turned into a beautiful sunset pictured below, the 2023 USF football spring game took place at Corbett Field on the campus of USF. All college football teams have a spring game as they gear up for the fall and the start of their season. What I saw under first-year head coach Alex Golesh differed from any past USF Bulls spring games. Usually, both teams have an offense and defense. Well, Saturday night was not the case as the green team was strictly offensive and the white team was strictly defensive. There was also no score being kept. There were plenty of fans there as well hoping to see the USF Bulls win more than one game.

Many will say you cannot judge this early but it was a sloppy game. What made it sloppy was the many penalties that were committed by both teams. Those types of penalties will kill an offensive drive or extend one for the opposing team. I am sure that Coach Golesh will work on having that cleaned up before the season starts. The best part of the game was the white team on defense. I had a birdseye view from their sideline. They had two interceptions in the game. One came on the second offensive possession that resulted in a pick-six. They also had many hard hits and pressures on the quarterback. Along with the interceptions they had some sacks as well. There is no hitting the quarterback in a spring game and of course, they were in red jerseys.
The green team started with maybe the starting quarterback Bryum Brown. Brown started games toward the end of the year and did very well. That position is still up in there as starting quarterback Garry Bohanan is out recovering from an injury he suffered in 2022. The other quarterback is Bryce Archie. Brown showed what he did last year with his ability to get out of the pocket and use his legs to escape pressure. He also was able to make short and deep throws. Archie came in on every second offensive position. He looked shaky at times but adjusted as he got more time out there. The running game was featured a lot and it picked up yards in bunches.
This is a very young team and it should have time to grow. From what I saw this team can win games. The defense looks so much better than it did a year ago. The one aspect they have to get better at is making their tackles and not missing them. The USF Bulls‘ defense also has to make sure they get off the field on third down and not allow the other team to extend drives. The offense, at times during the game, moved very quickly which is what style of offense Golesh was part of at Tennessee. There were also great catches by the wide receivers that resulted in touchdowns. If both teams can work together they will win more than one game in 2023. The special teams were rarely used but missed the only field goal that was attempted.
In the end, it was an entertaining game and it should leave fans very optimistic. I believe what the fans want to see is the team not get blown out and be competitive. The crowd was into the game right from the start. There was even an alumni flag football game at halftime to entertain them. It was good to see so many fans show up and hopefully, they show up during the season. Especially, with the Alabama Crimson Tide coming in for the second home game of the season. We will have to wait and see but no matter horns up and Go Bulls!
