The ACC is once again proving to be one of the better Power-5 baseball leagues in the country. As we moved along in the third week of the college baseball season, four teams have yet to taste defeat. Wake Forest, NC State, Georgia Tech, and Virginia are all still without a loss. In fact, every team in the league is at least at the .500 mark. Only two teams, Miami who has lost one in a row, and Clemson with a four-game skid, are on the wrong side of a streak. Everybody else is in decent if not good shape as the weekend nears. Here is how things look as the teams get ready for the weekend.

The Wake Forest Demon Deacons are 10-0 and their coach, Tom Walter, reached a milestone by getting win #800 earlier in the week. Brock Wilken is in a tie for the lead in home runs with seven in the nation. This team is getting it done in every way you can think of. For example, LHP Sean Sullivan, for the second week in a row, is the ACC Pitcher of the Week. Last Friday, Sullivan set down the first 16 hitters he faced in a win over Towson. He struck out 11 and allowed just one baserunner in six innings of hitless baseball. The Demon Deacons picked up Sullivan from the transfer portal out of Northwestern. In two appearances Sullivan has thrown 10 scoreless innings with 21 strikeouts and allowed only two hits. They also have this week’s Player of the Week in OF Adam Cecere who batted .579 in a 5-0 week for the team. He had four multi-hit games recorded 11 hits overall and drove in multi-runs in all five games totaling 12 altogether. He had a team-high four doubles, two HRs, and four walks. He slugged 1.105 a team-best, with an on-base percentage of .652. Wake is the best-hitting team in the league at .366 and the best pitching staff with a 1.74 ERA. They are second in the country in home runs with 26.

Georgia Tech (9-0) is off to a great start behind the bat of Jackson Finley who leads the conference in hitting with a .545 batting average (12-for-22). He also leads in slugging percentage at 1.455. He is getting help from Jack Rubenstein who is hitting .500 (14-for-28) and slugging .821. Tech is third in hitting at .330. If there is a red flag to consider, it is their pitching which has a staff ERA of 5.81 which is next to last in the league. Finley is the best on the mound too with a 1.00 ERA in nine innings, eight hits six runs, and only one earned run given up. Tech’s pitching will have to get better with conference season getting near. One bright spot is their closer Terry Busse who has four saves.

Virginia (8-0) has the second-best team batting average at .357. They are led by Henry Godbout at .500 (12-for-24), two HRs, and nine RBI. Catcher Kyle Teel is batting .481 (13-for-27) with two HRs and nine RBI. They can pitch as well. Jack O’Connor has pitched 11 innings, giving up three hits, zero runs, 10 SO, four walks, 0.91 ERA, and a batting average of .091. Jake Berry  has gone eight innings,  allowing one hit, 11 SO, three walks, and a batting average against of .040

Over the past couple of years, Boston College (5-1) has had a two-prong problem, pitching, and defense. Through the first eight games of the year, those problems have not materialized. On the mound, the Eagles have found a couple of hurlers that very well could make life a whole lot easier for this team. Starting pitcher Chris Flynn is 2-0 so far. He has thrown 12 innings, giving up four hits, zero runs, 17 SO to two walks, and a batting average against of .103. From the bullpen, John West is 1-0 with a 1.29 ERA, going seven innings, giving up two hits, one earned run, nine SO, and three walks. Flynn is averaging six innings a start, seven in strikeouts, and eight in batting average against .103. West is fourth in batting average against, .083. In the field, the Eagles are the second-best fielding team with a .991% and they have turned seven double plays, and committed only two errors.

The league as a whole has been really good with a record of 92-22 for a .807 winning pct so far. There is only one league that the ACC that does not have a winning record against. The American Athletic is 5-2 vs ACC teams. The ACC is 70-10 in home games as they took 13 of 15 mid-week non-conference games this week. Duke’s 9-0 win over #9 East Carolina on Tuesday was the third win by the league vs top-10 opponents. This league is already putting a league resume together that will do very well come selection time for the NCAA.

Next week we will be back with more from ACC Baseball.
