For Boston College to prove the doubters in the Atlantic Coast Conference wrong, several things may need to go their way this upcoming fall. One of those positives would be a full season from their quarterback. Phil Jurkovec’s time at the Height has had its ups and downs. There have been solid and even great games, as well as time spent on the sideline because of injury. As the second week of summer camp gets started, the Eagles signal-caller gets himself and his team ready for what could be a very important season. For Jurkovec, this is his last chance to prove to NFL scouts that his name should be in the conversation when it comes to next April’s draft. The team is looking to showcase itself as one that deserved a little more respect than it’s been getting from the rest of the league in the preseason.

The Notre Dame transfer burst onto the scene at Boston College with much fanfare, only to have to wait for a late eligibility waiver to allow him on the field for the 2020 season. In the end, it was worth it, as he threw for 2,558 yards and 17 touchdowns. The yardage was the most in program history with ten starts under his belt. It also led to the most 300-yard passing games since 2007 when Matt Ryan was under center. The seventeen touchdown passes were good, however, the five interceptions were even better. There were six starts in which Jurkovec did not throw a pick. BC would finish that season with six league wins, the most in over a decade. There was reason to be optimistic about 2021.

However, those positive vibes came to a quick end. After an opening game performance in which Phil was 16-of-24 for 303 yards and three touchdowns vs Colgate, the season for both Jurkovec and the team came to a crashing halt. The following week at UMass a freak injury to his throwing wrist took him out of that game in the first quarter. Although the Eagles would go on to win that game and start the season 4-0, things were not the same without #5 at the controls. He would return late in the season and guide the Eagles to late-season wins over Virginia Tech and Georgia Tech. But the lack of strength in his throwing wrist would cause Jurkovec to throw for 150 yards in three of the last four games.

He is the key that runs the BC offensive engine. His 3,472 yards already put him with some of the best QBs in Boston College history. But Jurkovec has his sights set on a bigger prize: the NFL 2023 draft. To be one of the first QB taken, Jurkovec will have to find a way to stay on the field. Something that during his time at BC has been somewhat of a challenge. If the offensive line can do their job of protecting the QB, Jurkovec could have one of those seasons in which his name is heard a lot sooner than anybody would have accepted. The Eagles are also looking to have a year to remember.
