LOWELL, Mass. – The UMass Lowell baseball team (14-19, 7-8 AE) returns to action in another busy week. The River Hawks will head to Bryant University (14-18, 5-7 NEC) for a Tuesday afternoon matchup with the Bulldogs before hosting the University of Rhode Island Rams (10-25, 6-3 A10) on Wednesday afternoon. UMass Lowell then visits the Maine Black Bears (15-14, 12-3 AE) for a weekend series.

LOOKING AT UMASS LOWELL

The River Hawks enter the week ahead after going 3-2 last week. UMass Lowell took down Merrimack on Tuesday before falling to Massachusetts on Wednesday afternoon. The River Hawks won the weekend series against conference foe Hartford, winning the first two games of the series before dropping the finale. Sophomore Fritz Genther (Kingston, N.Y.) hit .545 over the five-game week, recording nine runs and 12 hits. The sophomore added six extra-base hits and tallied five RBIs. Freshman Jacob Humphrey (Standish, ME.) and sophomore Roddy Hernandez (Jersey City, N.J.) had strong weeks for the River Hawks, picking up 10 hits and five RBIs each. Humphrey was 10-11 in stolen bases over five games.

ON THE MOUND

Graduate student Zach Rodgers (Parrish, Fla.) led the team with nine strikeouts in two appearances for the River Hawks. Freshman LJ Keevan (Holden, Mass.) earned the win in the series opener against Hartford, throwing 6.0 innings and striking out four. Senior Joshua Becker (Burlington, Mass.) threw 7.0 innings against the Hawks on Sunday afternoon and struck out six.

Series History vs. Bryant

First Meeting: May 7, 1993 (UML, 21-13)
Last Meeting: May 14, 2019 (UML, 3-2)

UMass Lowell is 29-15 all-time against Bryant. The River Hawks are 1-4 in the last five against the Bulldogs and will look to win a second straight game in the matchup.

Scouting the Bulldogs

Bryant has won two straight and three of its last four games. Last time out, the Bulldogs went 2-1 against Merrimack, winning the last two games of the series. Matt Woods leads the team with 41 hits. The senior has also recorded 18 runs, four triples, and 23 RBIs. Alex Lane leads the team with nine home runs and 29 RBIs on the year. Collin Lowe is 3-3 on the season with a team-high 3.30 ERA and 40 strikeouts.

UMass Lowell is 1-7 all-time against Rhode Island. The River Hawks will look to snap a six-game losing skid against the Rams.

Scouting the Rams

Rhode Island enters the week coming off a 2-1 series win over Massachusetts. The Rams took the final two games of the series after dropping the opening game. Addison Kopack leads the team with 28 runs and 37 hits on the year. Kopack is batting .314 on the year and has hit six home runs. Trystan Levesque is 3-5 on the season with a 3.72 ERA. He’s thrown 48.1 innings and struck out 41 batters. Domenic Picone leads the Rams with 58 strikeouts on the year.

First Meeting: April 12, 2014 (Maine, 5-4)
Last Meeting: May 9, 2021 (UML, 10-3)

UMass Lowell is 13-17 all-time against Maine. The River Hawks have six of the last seven meetings with the Black Bears and have won three straight matchups.

Scouting the Black Bears

Maine is 12-3 in conference play this season and is currently riding a five-game win streak. The Black Bears went 2-1 against NJIT before sweeping UAlbany over the weekend. Jeff Mejia leads the team batting .376 on the season with 20 runs, 35 hits, and 15 RBIs. Joe Bramanti has hit a team-high 11 home runs this year and has a team-high 43 RBIs. Six Maine pitchers have recorded at least two wins in the 2022 campaign.

STOLEN GOODS

As a unit, the River Hawks have stolen 80 bases on 94 attempts this season. Freshman Jacob Humphrey (Standish, ME.)  is 28-29 on stolen base attempts in his rookie campaign, recording 10 last week. Senior Robert Gallagher (Mullica Hill, N.J.)  has 25 stolen bases on the year in 26 attempts. Fritz Genther is 8-10 in stolen base attempts and senior Gerry Siracusa (Kinnelon, N.J.) is 12-15 on the year.

A-OKKKKKK

Graduate student Ryan Towle (Westfield, Mass.) leads the pitching core with 52 strikeouts on the year. Joshua Becker and LJ Keevan have each struck out 50 and 42 hitters, respectively. Sophomore Michael Quigley (Halifax, Mass.) has sat 21 batters this season, while Zach Rodgers has struck out 18 batters.

GOING YARD

UMass Lowell has hit a collective 30 home runs through 33 games in the 2022 campaign. Gerry Siracusa leads the team with seven home runs while junior Cedric Rose (Pittsfield, Mass.) has hit six. Robert Gallagher has also hit five home runs this season.
