One of the issues that USF had last year was the carousel at quarterback. I was at all but one of their home games. At the start of the game, they would announce the starting quarterback but by the end of the game, he was not the starter. I saw Jordan McCloud, who has transferred, Cade Fortin who got injured, Noah Johnson, and Katravis Marsh. If I forgot someone I apologize. This was a problem that contributed to just one win. These were questions that were asked to head Coach Jeff Scott many times in post-game press conferences. With the Bulls spring game coming up in 16 days, that is a question once again. From what I have seen and read, many guys could start at quarterback. Let’s hope by the time the season starts on September 2nd against the North Carolina Wolfpack, there is a firm decision as to who it will be.
Coach Scott, with four spring practices behind USF, has a player that has been standing out. That player is Cade Fortin. Fortin played very little last year but when he did he was good. I can remember seeing him come in and start moving the ball down the field. As they got near the goal line he got injured. Fortin has been quarantine as well. As we know that could change by week’s end because there are still two more workouts in which one of them is a closed scrimmage. Fortin is a transfer from North Carolina. According to Scott, he has improved his delivery which was an issue last year. We need to see Fortin as the one but this is the third extensive quarterback competition in the last four seasons. The depth is a good problem to have for this year’s USF Bulls.
Three other players will be vying for the position. The first is Jarren Williams, a transfer from the Miami Hurricanes. Williams is a very talented and smart player with a good arm. He will have to learn the USF offense and that puts him behind the other three. The second is Katravis Marsh who played in some games last year. He has a strong arm and he has made some incredible throws. Marsh still has a long way to go but is making improvements. The last one is Timmy McClain. He has been compared to Michael Vick. McClain can use his legs to get him out of trouble. He will be exciting to watch.
I am looking forward to seeing who the starting quarterback is for USF. I am hoping to not see a carousel. If the Bulls are going to have a better season than 2020, they will need to get this fixed. Coach Scott is hoping now to have a full season with spring practice and a spring game this season will be much different. I could see any of these four being the starter because they all have a different skill set. The season starts in six months so there will be many changes until the season starts.
