USF or the University of South Florida finally got the news that they wanted. That news came that they finally got the funding for a new indoor sports facility. I got a chance on a podcast that I co-host with Larry Frank called Bulls Eye, to interview head athletic director Michael Kelly just a few weeks ago. I asked him about the new indoor facility and an on-campus stadium. He told us that they were still waiting on the funding for the indoor practice center and the on-campus stadium was not in the cards anytime soon. Kelly said that he wanted to add the indoor facility and it would help add to getting athletes to want to come to the University of South Florida. Someone finally donated the money that the University needed and now it is a reality.
USF has an indoor facility already in place. That facility is named after legendary Tampa Bay Buccaneers and former athletic director Lee Roy Selmon. That part will get a three-million-dollar renovation. From what I saw on Bulls Eye last week, it will upgrade the training room, locker room, and relaxing area for the current and former players. This upgrade should and will attract future USF Bulls, football players. The other 22 million will be used to build a new state-of-the-art practice field for the Bulls. This will help during spring and the season. The heat and rain will allow USF to practice and stay ahead for the team that is playing for the upcoming week. This is a huge tool for head coach Jeff Scott to show future football players and transfers that want to come to USF.
After hearing a recent interview with Scott, he was promised this facility when they were hiring him. The Bulls only won one game a year ago. This is the year that USF could have that turnaround season. This year they will have their first home game against the University of Florida Gators. The Gators are one of the big three that call the state of Florida home. The facility will help prepare for the powerhouse Gators. I think Jeff Scott will have the Bulls in better shape this year. If they beat the Gators, it would be a huge upset. The players seem excited about what has happened with the new news. It would be cool to see the spring game next year in the indoor facility. Spring football did not happen last year because of the coronavirus.
In the end, this is huge when it comes as it will help in recruiting. We all know that USF will not get four or five-star recruits. That is because they are one of the smaller universities. This will help them get three-star recruits. It will help get the kids that from this state instead of them going to their rival, the UCF Knights. I cannot wait to see pictures as they build what the indoor facility will look like. Hopefully, we will get to see how Jeff Scott, Michael Kelly, and the rest of the football team do with it. My opinion is this is huge and I am happy USF finally got what they wanted and the fans should be happy and not be concerned with an on-campus stadium for right now.
