NCAA: Five Teams That Should Have Won a National Championship

When it comes to college football, the main goal is to win the national championship. Through the years, no matter with BCS and now the college football playoffS, there have been great teams that should have won the game. Those teams that may have been in the championship game or never got to the game. Many will say that their team belongs there and others will say no way. Looking at a list the same teams are on it more than once so my selections will only be one per team. I will not repeat the same team. I am also going to make sure that I pick some teams from the BCS years and the CFP years. Football is my favorite sport to write and podcast about. I love all levels of high school, college, and the NFL. These are my picks in college football.

Virginia Tech Hokies (1999)

This team was led by Michael Vick and went 11-1 during that season. The Nebraska Cornhuskers and Penn State Nittany Lions had good teams as well. The Hokies got to the national championship game to play the Florida State Seminoles. Many considered that these were the best two teams and had the right to play for the title. During the game, the two outstanding players were Michael Vick and Peter Warrick. Warrick was a wide receiver for the Seminoles. In the end, Florida State would win the game by a 46-29 score. The Hokies’ only loss in 1999 came at the worst time.

Auburn Tigers (2004)

This team finished the season with a 13-0 record. The biggest aspect of the team was their running game. It was led by three men, quarterback Jason Campbell, Cadillac Williams, and Ronnie Brown. The team that won the championship was the USC Trojans. Tommy Tuberville, who coached the Tigers had a great team. Auburn never got a chance to play USC. Many are wondering what might have happened if they did. The Trojans routed the Oklahoma Sooners 55-19. Would the game be closer if the Tigers had played USC? Would the score have been different? We will never know.

Miami Hurricanes (2002)

There are many teams out there that hate the Ohio State Buckeyes even outside the Big 10. One of these teams is the Miami Hurricanes. This team went 12-1. The Hurricanes also had a 34 game win streak snapped by Ohio State. The Buckeyes won 31-24 in double overtime in the national championship. Miami had a great team led by quarterback Ken Dorsey and running back Willis McGahee. McGahee suffered an injury during the game. Many say that if he not gotten hurt the result of the game would have been different.

Georgia Bulldogs (2017)

This team finished the season at 13-2. One of the two losses was against the Auburn Tigers. They would avenge that loss in the SEC Championship game. They were led by running backs, Sony Michel and Nick Chubb, and freshman quarterback Jake Fromm. They would play the Alabama Crimson Tide in the national championship game. The Bulldogs took a 13-0 lead into halftime. Georgia blew that lead losing to the Crimson Tide 26-23. This team was good but lost two games both to SEC teams. The juggernaut knows as Alabama would have one less championship under their belt has the Bulldogs won.

LSU Tigers (2011)

This team finished the season at 13-1 and was one of the best defensive teams in college football. It was led by Tyrann Mathieu. During the season, they beat eight ranked opponents, three of which were top three teams. They allowed only 20 or more points just three times that season. The Tigers would play the Alabama Crimson Tide in the title game. Unfortunately, they would lose that game 21-0. It was a one-sided game as Alabama keep the LSU offense off balance. The Tigers could never get off offensively in this one.

I know there are many teams out there that I did not put on the list. I am sure I will catch some hate for not mentioning the Ohio State Buckeyes, Alabama Crimson Tide, Clemson Tigers, and the USC Trojans. All of those teams do belong on this list of great teams that should have won a national championship. With these teams basically being in many of the BCS and CFP playoffs games that is why I did not put them down as my choices. In the end, I missed teams and probably put teams on here that do not belong. In the end, what is your opinion?
