This past week in the NFL saw a few things happen and one that blew everybody’s mind. As teams start to gear up and get ready to play the 2020 season, players are still moving around and others are getting resigned.

Patrick Mahomes just led the Kansas City Chiefs to their first Super Bowl victory since 1970. His unique style of play has taken the league by storm and since his rookie season, it appeared to be inevitable that he would one day get an NFL championship.

Now that he had accomplished this goal, to go along with the Super Bowl MVP, the Chiefs looked to solidify his and the team’s future. They made the move and signed Mahomes to a 10-year contract extension that can reach as high as $503 million. Ah yes, you read that correctly. Mahomes will be guaranteed $63 million at signing with $103.5 million guaranteed by March of 2021. The contract goes on to give him $141.4 million guaranteed by March of 2022 if he’s still on the roster. Some have said this is a massive deal and others are saying he sold himself short.

The thing about this deal is it opens up a whole new world for other quarterbacks in the league looking for bigger and better deals. The first one that comes to my mind is Dak Prescott in Dallas. He has been looking for a deal that would secure his future for years to come and one has to wonder how Team Dak is looking at this deal. They will definitely be looking at the Mahomes deal closely to see what aspects of it they can incorporate into a new deal.

For Houston Texans QB, Deshaun Watson, the negotiating between the $29.5 million Ryan Tannehill just got and Russell Wilson’s $35 million annual average just got wider. Team Watson will now be looking into a bigger and better deal as well.

Another thing to look at with this deal is how it will affect the quarterback market for years to come. Guys like Lamar Jackson, Jared Goff, and Kyler Murray will eventually get their turn and we will have to see how those deals get worked out.

In the end, this deal will have many effects across the landscape of the league. We will see if teams take the long term or short term deal road. How will this affect agents that do not have many big-name clients like Mahomes’ people?

One thing is for sure. Mahomes and his family are now set for the rest of their lives and the Chiefs NFL future over the next decade will lay on the shoulders of their franchise QB.
