Villanova topped Temple in a Wednesday night, Big 5, showdown. The Owls were beaten by 10, with the final score being, 69-59. The Owls struggled to get everyone involved, as only six players were on the scoring sheet in the loss.
The Owls and Wildcats were tied early on, and the first half included a lot of back and forth lead changes. The score at the end of one half was very low but was in favor of Nova, 24-23.
The second half was a different story. The game had slowed down and included a lot more scoring. The teams were more efficient, which led to a higher score. The Owls jumped out of the half and even had a seven-point lead, 33-26, with 16 minutes left to play. However, the Wildcats fought back, and with just over five minutes left, they took back the lead, and this time it was for good. Due to a lot of late fouling, the Wildcats were able to increase their lead to 10.
Nate Pierre-Louis had 19 points, Shizz Alston, Jr. had 15 and Quinton Rose ended with 13. These three combined for all but 12 of the team’s points. The inability for everyone to get involved really played a big factor in the loss. Those three were the reason that the game was even close, but all of the pressure cannot be on three guys who will eventually get burned out.
As for Nova, they had more distribution when it came to scoring. The bench players for Villanova really showed up. Their two highest scorers came off of the bench. Jermaine Samuels had 15 and Joe Cremo ended with 11. These two led the charge and their bench certainly did what Temple’s couldn’t.
The Owls drop to 7-2 after that Big 5 loss. The Wildcats also have the same record as they sit at 7-2 after the win. Next up for the Owls is UMass on December 12 at home. Full coverage will be provided of that game.
