Alex Rivera named America East Rookie of the Week
BOSTON, Mass. – Freshman guard Alex Rivera (Lowell, Mass.) earned UMass Lowell’s first America East men’s basketball weekly award this season, as he was named the league’s Rookie of the Week on Monday.
In a 2-2 week for the River Hawks, Rivera averaged 15.3 points, while shooting 62 percent (24-39) from the floor, including an impressive, 48 percent (11-23) from three-point territory. The guard also logged 3.3 rebounds per game, in addition to recording a total of 10 assists and two steals.
Rivera helped propel his squad to a 2-1 performance at the Brown Bears Tip-Off Classic, capping the weekend off with season-best marks of 20 points, four three-point field goals and four assists in an exciting, 94-90 victory against Sacred Heart on November 18. In that contest, which was tied on 10 occasions, he drained a three to put the River Hawks up for good with just over four minutes remaining.
He shot 7-for-9 from the field for 16 points in a win against Army on Nov. 17, while registering 13 points against Brown on Nov. 16 and 12 points against Central Connecticut on Nov. 13.
Posting double-figures in all five games he’s appeared in so far this season, his ranks second on the team with 15.0 points per games and first with a 46.4 clip from long range.
