Jamal Crawford is still a free agent heading into the 2018 season. Multiple teams have expressed their interest in the 38-year-old, including the Philadelphia 76ers. The Sixers are a team that would be able to pay the veteran to come off of the bench and help aid their young team. Jamal would be a pivotal player for the young core to grow around, just like JJ Redick has been. Crawford can still hit threes exceptionally well and would help this young team compete for a championship.
The Sixers have lost a few big pieces to free agency. Marco Belinelli and Ersan Ilyasova left for other teams this summer. Both of those guys played a veteran role and shot well off of the bench. However, both players found new homes for the upcoming season. Crawford could aid the team and fill the shoes of Belinelli with his three-point shot. The shooting guard has played for a bunch of different teams over the span of his 18-year career, most recently with the Minnesota Timberwolves. He has declined his player option for the 2018-2019 season and has been a free agent since.
The Sixers have shown a little interest in Crawford and he has as well. Crawford told Scoop B Radio that he would want to come to Philly. Crawford explained, “I like their city. I like how into it they are about basketball”. Crawford has a lot of connections with the team already. He played with Redick in LA for a few years and also talks to Markelle often. Crawford also explained how much of a fan he was of Brett Brown. As long as they can work out a deal, Crawford would be a good fit for this team.
Crawford is nearing the end of his career, and the Sixers need veteran guys to come off of the bench and compete for 15-20 minutes. Crawford is a guy who could do that. He definitely is interested in playing in Philly and is awaiting the right contract to be offered to him. The season starts in about two months, and it would be a surprise if he was not picked up by a team. The three-time Sixth Man of the Year is a guy who could help this team take down big Eastern Conference teams like the Raptors, Celtics, and Wizards. With the Lebron out of the East, the Sixers and Celtics have emerged as the early favorites to make the Finals. The Sixers will need their young core to take another jump, as well as get some extra help from veteran guys. Crawford would be nothing but a plus for the Sixers.
As of right now, no further details have been released regarding the Sixers talking to Crawford.
