Spinners losing streak reaches three after 9-3 loss to State College

The start of the second half of the New York Penn League season has not been kind to the Lowell Spinners. Since it has begun, the Spinners have had a hard time playing good baseball. Friday night, they had one bad inning in which two costly errors were made. They contributed to the State College Spikes tallying five runs en route to a 9-3 victory over Lowell.

After the game, Manager Cory Wimberly thought his team “looked a little sluggish at the start”. It did not take the Spikes long to take advantage.

State College got on the board two batters in against Spinner starting pitcher Chris Machamer, who was making his home debut on this night. Leadoff hitter Nick Dunn ripped a double to the left-center gap. He would score on a base hit up the middle by Devlin Perez. Two batters into the game the Spikes were already up 1-0.

In the second, it got a whole lot worse for the Spinners and a lot better for State College. They would bat around in the inning scoring five times against Machamer. They got some help from a Lowell defense that committed two errors. There was a hit batsman as well when the Spikes did put wood to ball, and the damage was done. Brady Whalen cleared the bases with a double to left-center field. One hitter later, Stanley Espinal traded places with Whalen. His double went to right field and it was 6-0 Spikes. It ended Machamer’s night ( 1.2 IP, five hits, six runs, only one earned) and once again taking care of the baseball, or lack there of, came back to bite the Spinners.

Meanwhile, State College starting pitcher, Jim Voyles had, for the most part, a rocking chair night on the mound. At one point during his six-inning performance, he retired 11 Lowell batters in a row. His line was six innings, four hits, and one earned run should give you an idea of how much control he had on Friday night.

The Spinners did have better at-bats versus the State Colleges bullpen. Lowell’s first run came on a sacrifice fly from Xavier LeGrant. They would add two more in the seventh on an RBI double from Kole Cotam. That was followed by a run-scoring base hit from Tyler Dearden. Both runs were charged to Will Changarotty. That made the score 9-3 State College.

After the game, Wimberly said, “he has lots of trust in this team”.  However, since the record breaking eleven game win streak that put the Spinners in the thick of the playoff hunt, this team has taken a small step backward. The manager knows his team needs to get back to what got them the win streak in the first place.

Voyles gets the win and is now 3-3. Machamer takes the loss and he is 0-2.

The Spinners will look to bounce back on Saturday with first pitch at 5:30 pm.
