ACC Basketball News and Notes
With the stench run about to begin, here is how the Atlantic Coast Conference looks.
The Virginia Cavaliers stand at 9-0 in ACC play for the first time since winning its first 12 league games in 1980-81. Their 12-game winning streak is their longest since starting 19-0 in 2014-15. Last Saturday’s win at Cameron Indoor Stadium vs Duke was their first road win against the Blue Devils since 1985. Kyle Guy, who had 15 in the win at Duke, has reached double figures in 18 games and has led UVA in scoring in 10 of those contests.

Wake Forest’s Doral Moore recorded his seventh double-double in last Saturday’s loss at Louisville. Four of those have come in conference play. Moore opened the game by knocking down his first three shots, extending his consecutive field goal streak to 14 before he finally missed an attempt from the field. The streak is the second longest in school history, behind his 16 straight makes earlier this season.
North Carolina State’s Freshman Allerik Freeman was named ACC player of the week as he delivered a career-high 29 points on 7-for-7 shooting last weekend in the Wolfpack win at Chapel Hill over UNC. NC State has now beaten four ranked teams this season, including three top-10 teams in No.2 Arizona, No.2 Duke, No. 10 North Carolina.

There are Co-Rookies of the week. Duke sensational freshman Marvin Bagley III wins the award for the sixth time this year. He is joined by Miami freshman Lonnie Walker IV. In an overtime loss to Florida State last Saturday, Walker IV went for 23 points, reaching double figures for the fifth straight game. Over his last five contests, Walker IV is averaging 15.3 points, 3.8 rebounds, 2.4 assists, and has hit 16-for -35 (.457) from behind the arc.
The Virginia Tech Hokies have been a bit of a three-point machine. They have hit at least one from distance in 488 straight games. VT has hit a three-pointer in every game since joining the league backed in 2004-05. Since the three-point arc was added in the 1986-87 season, the Hokies have made at least one in all but three games played. The last time they did not make one from deep, was on February 1, 2003, at Providence.

Boston College’s Junior Guard Jerome Robinson is leading the ACC in scoring at 22.5 through nine games. He has scored 20 or more in five ACC games, including a season-high 29 in a loss at Virgina. His overall FG percentage of (55.8%) and 3-point FG % (48%) in ACC play ranked in fifth and second respectively.
The Louisville Cardinal ranked second in the nation in blocked shots (7.3). A big reason why has been the play of Anas Mahmoud. He has blocked three or more shots in a game nine times already this year and ranks third nationally (3.5).
That’s it for this week, we will see you next week with more news & notes from the ACC.
