Happy holidays to everyone and here’s hoping 2018 is a great year. With Christmas right around the corner, that means the non-conference schedule of hoops that teams in the Atlantic Coast Conference have been playing is almost finished.  Come the first week in January, it’s time to butt heads and get after it. With that said, this is what is happening in the ACC.

The league has had a tremendous non-conference season to date. The record of 114-27 (.809) winning percentage is outstanding, to say the least. As of last week, 11 of the 15 teams in the conference had a winning streak. Florida State has the longest at nine games and Miami is right behind them at eight. The flip side shows only one team, Georgia Tech, with a losing skid of more than one game, theirs sits at three. The conference is going to be abreast once league play gets underway.

Boston College sophomore guard Ky Bowman was the ACC player of the week for the Dec. 12- 17 period. His performance vs Duke, 30 points, 10 rebounds, and nine assists, is one of the early seasons highlights.  The 30 points were the most scored against Duke since Wake Forests John Collins went for 31 vs the Blue Devils back on Feb.18, 2017. The 10 rebounds and nine assists were each the second-most registered by an opposing player vs Duke this season. It was Bowman’s fourth career 30 point game, and his third in the ACC. in 19 career conference contests.

The Rookie of the week is Miami’s Ronnie Walker IV. In their win at home over Boston University, Walker went for 26 points and seven rebounds. Eighteen of those points came in the second half, as he was 6-10 from the field, including 4-5 from three-point range.

Florida State’ s 9-0 start is their best since they opened the 2003-04 season with 10 straight wins. In their victory over Tulane on Dec.10, the Seminoles shot a blistering 58% from the floor in the second half and were 5-9 from behind the arc. They scored 17 points off of 17 Green Wave turnovers and held a 33-15 advantage in bench scoring. Florida State’s first test in the conference comes on Dec. 30 when they face Duke.

The Clemson Tigers have been on a roll to start the campaign and their 9-1 start is their best beginning to a season since 2008-09. Tigers Head Coach Brad Brownell notched his 300th career win against Florida this past weekend. The team already has seven 20-point outings this year. Elijah Thomas has recorded three double-doubles so far this season. The Tigers begin conference play at home next weekend vs NC State.

The Wake Forest win over Army back on Dec. 8 gave the Demon Deacons a five-game winning streak. It matches the longest streak under fourth-year Head Coach Danny Manning. In that win over the Black Knights, six Demon Deacons finished the game in double figures.

North Carolina lit it up from three-point range in their win over Western Carolina back on Dec. 6th. They shot a school record 72.7 percent, making 16 of 22 from behind the arc. Junior Luke Maye posted his sixth double-double in that game (12 points, 12 rebounds), he also tied his career-high in assists with five. Maye has scored 199 points in the Tar Heels first 10 games, last season he tallied 194 points in 35 contests.

Next week the fun begins as the conference season gets underway, can’t wait!.
