There is an old saying in baseball that good pitching will always stop good hitting. The Lowell Spinners do not present a lineup that would be called Murderers Row by any stretch, but they do have some guys that can swing the bat, just not on Tuesday night.

Three Staten Island pitchers combined on a three-hit shutout, the team’s eleventh of the season which leads the league. They got some timely hits to back up that solid effort to take the middle game of this three game set 3-0 over Lowell.

How good was Staten Island pitching on Tuesday night? The Spinners left only five runners on base for the game, three of them were left in scoring position. Yoan Aybar was the only member of the starting nine to reach third base, that was in the fifth and was left there when Steve Reveles struck out to end the inning.

Not to be out done, the Spinners received good pitching themselves as starter Jake Thompson went the first two innings, and according to his manager showed his best fastball since joining the team. Suarez would go on to say his outings have been quality ones and he gets better every time out there.

The manager was hoping to build off of Monday night’s exciting win, but it was not to be.

The Yankees starting pitcher Jio Orosco, now 3-1, set the tone from the very first pitch he threw. He came into this outing having allowed only eight earned runs in 29.2 innings of work, and he showed why. He would retire 13 of the 18 hitters he faced, though he did give up two hits and walked three in his five frames of work but was never in trouble.

In the sixth, Orosco handed things over to relief pitcher Justin Kamplain. All he did in three innings was set down nine of the eleven men he faced giving up one hit and one walk.

Eduardo Rivera was summoned in from the pen in the ninth and he would take care of the Spinners in order to pick up his sixth saves of the season.

Staten Island scored single runs in the second, fifth, and sixth to win this one and they improved to 41-25. The Spinners dropped to 30-35.

Thompson takes the loss and he is now 0-3 on the year.

Game three of this series and final game of this brief homestand is set for Wednesday night with first pitch set at 6:35 pm.
