On their just completed home stand, in which they swept Brooklyn, the Lowell Spinners welcomed two new members to the ball club.

The first is outfield Andy Martinez, who signed with the Red Sox as an undrafted free agent back in 2016. He made his pro debut playing in the Dominican Summer League that year, hitting .263 in 38 at bats that spanned over 14 games.

His returned to the DSL this summer and was hitting .314 with 13 stolen bases in 38 contests when he got the promotion on July 24th. He played his college ball at Des Moines Area CC.

The other new face is infielder Zack Sterry, who was drafted in the 8th round of this past June’s draft by the Red Sox. Zack played his college baseball at Oakland University,  where he was a three-year starter. This past spring Sterry was named to the All-Horizon second team after leading the conference in slugging percentage (.643). This past Saturday night he recorded a four RBI night vs Brooklyn while playing first base for the Spinners.

There is one player on the roster that fans in Lowell may not see this season. His name is Jake Thompson and he is a pitcher. Boston picked him in the fourth round of the spring draft. He pitched in the PAC-12 for Oregon State who spent most of the college season as the number 1 ranked team in the country.

Thompson’s senior season was a big reason why the Beavers were that high in the rankings. He was named to the All-PAC 12 team after going 14-0 this spring. He would throw 118 innings for Oregon State and had an ERA of 1.52. He would help lead his team to the College World Series in Omaha. The innings pitched could be the reason Thompson has not seen any action for the Spinners and no doubt he has a future with numbers like these.

We keep talking and writing about Yoan Aybar with good reason. Yes, his strikeouts total is high with  41 in 110 total at bats. But, Aybar also leads the league in triples with five. If Aybar can learn to put more balls in play the Red Sox made have a player here.
