Sunday night in the NBA delivered a whirlwind of early-season drama, featuring breathtaking individual dominance, surprising undefeated surges, distressing injury updates, and concerning starts for expected contenders. From Salt Lake City to Madison Square Garden, the action across the league offered plenty of headlines as the 2026–27 campaign hit full sprint.
Luka Dončić Explodes for Season-High 52 Points in Salt Lake City
The Los Angeles Lakers capped off the night with a thrilling 132–123 road victory over the Utah Jazz, spearheaded by a masterpiece from Luka Dončić. Dončić poured in an NBA season-high 52 points while adding 10 assists and 7 rebounds, draining eight 3-pointers in a virtuoso performance.
With the game tied late in the fourth quarter, Dončić orchestrated a decisive 14–5 run, hitting back-to-back clutch triples—including a cold-blooded step-back—to hand Los Angeles a 127–121 advantage with under two minutes remaining. Austin Reaves provided vital offensive support with 29 points, while Keyonte George led Utah with 24 points, 9 rebounds, and 10 assists. The win moved the Lakers to an unblemished 3–0 on the young season.
Crisis at the Garden: Winless Knicks Fall to 0–3 Against Magic
At Madison Square Garden, alarm bells are ringing early for the New York Knicks. New York fell 111–102 to the Orlando Magic, dropping to a troubling 0–3 start. Orlando exploited New York’s defensive miscues in the fourth quarter to pull away down the stretch.
Speaking after the game, team captain Jalen Brunson emphasized urgency and unity amid early adversity.
“Find whatever it takes to win,” Brunson said. “Control what you can control. Focus on the little details that may seem small but can impact winning. Most importantly, do it together.”
The Knicks will need to address their defensive lapses quickly as they look to turn their season around.
Timberwolves and Grizzlies Surge to Surprising 3–0 Starts
While some contenders are searching for traction, two Western Conference rivals are riding high.
-
- Minnesota Timberwolves: Improved to 3–0 following a dominant 117–94 victory over the Toronto Raptors at Target Center. Star guard Anthony Edwards sparked the offense, while Julius Randle and Rudy Gobert controlled the interior to keep Minnesota unbeaten.
- Memphis Grizzlies: Matched Minnesota at 3–0 after securing a gritty 123–112 road victory against the Sacramento Kings at Golden 1 Center. Memphis pulled away in the fourth quarter with balanced scoring and high-tempo transition play.

Thunder Move to 3–0, But Victory Overshadowed by Severe Injuries
The reigning Western Conference contender Oklahoma City Thunder outlasted the LA Clippers 108–101 at Paycom Center, but the win came at a devastating cost.
During the second half, star guard Jalen Williams suffered a severe lower leg injury that halted play for five minutes. Williams was wheeled off the court by medical staff, though he gave fans two thumbs-up as he departed.
To make matters worse, guard Cason Wallace (left shoulder soreness) and forward Jaylin Williams (right wrist soreness) both exited early in the first quarter and did not return.
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander was visibly emotional during his postgame interview.
“I just feel bad for him,” Gilgeous-Alexander said regarding Jalen Williams. “It’s obviously going to be tough without a player like that. But he’s not gone forever. He’ll be back better than ever, and we know it. We’ve just got to hold the fort down until he comes back.”
