The Mike Norvell era has officially ended at Florida State University. Now, the Seminoles face another critical coaching search. Florida State fired Norvell on Sunday, November 1, 2026, following another disappointing performance against Clemson. The decision ends a seven-year tenure that featured championship success and a stunning collapse. University President Richard McCullough announced the decision and confirmed that Florida State would immediately begin a national coaching search. Meanwhile, the Seminoles named Rick Stockstill their interim head coach.
Norvell finished his Florida State career with a 41-39 record. However, his final three seasons ultimately overshadowed his earlier accomplishments. The Seminoles entered 2026 hoping to restore their winning tradition. Instead, another disappointing start forced university leadership to make a difficult financial decision. How Did Florida State Reach This Point?
Norvell arrived in Tallahassee in December 2019 after building a successful program at Memphis. Initially, Florida State struggled as Norvell attempted to rebuild the Seminoles. However, the program eventually found success during the 2022 season. Florida State finished 10-3 and appeared ready to challenge college football’s traditional powers. Then came the remarkable 2023 season. The Seminoles completed an undefeated regular season and defeated Louisville for the ACC championship. Florida State finished 13-0 before the College Football Playoff committee controversially excluded the Seminoles from the four-team field.
Georgia eventually crushed Florida State 63-3 in the Orange Bowl. Nevertheless, the Seminoles appeared ready to remain national championship contenders. Unfortunately, everything changed during the following season. Florida State collapsed to 2-10 in 2024 despite entering the year with considerable expectations. The Seminoles struggled offensively, lacked consistency, and failed to replace several departing stars. Furthermore, the problems continued into 2025. Florida State finished 5-7 and missed another bowl game. Norvell entered 2026 needing substantial improvement. Instead, Florida State stumbled to 3-5 following its 36-24 loss against Clemson. Consequently, university leadership decided the program needed a different direction.
Norvell’s Buyout Creates Another Problem
Florida State now faces a significant financial challenge. According to USA TODAY, Norvell’s departure carries an estimated $50.3 million buyout. That figure ranks among college football’s largest coaching buyouts. Additionally, the university faces substantial athletic department debt. Those financial obligations could complicate the search for Norvell’s replacement. The Seminoles must also consider their spending on recruiting, player retention, facilities, and assistant coaches.
Furthermore, Florida State cannot afford another unsuccessful coaching hire. The program needs someone capable of rebuilding its roster while competing in today’s transfer portal environment. Ultimately, university leadership must balance financial responsibility with its championship expectations.

Who Could Replace Mike Norvell?
Several prominent names have already emerged in media reports. However, Florida State has not publicly announced a permanent replacement or confirmed a leading candidate.
Manny Diaz — Duke
Diaz could become one of Florida State’s strongest candidates. The former Miami Hurricanes head coach has rebuilt his reputation at Duke. He guided the Blue Devils to consecutive nine-win seasons and the 2025 ACC championship. Furthermore, Diaz graduated from Florida State and previously worked under Bobby Bowden. Duke entered November with a 6-2 record, strengthening Diaz’s credentials. However, Diaz signed a contract extension through 2031. Florida State would likely need a substantial financial commitment to attract him.
Jimbo Fisher — Former Florida State Head Coach
Could Florida State bring back the coach who delivered its last national championship? Fisher led the Seminoles to the 2013 national championship behind Heisman Trophy winner Jameis Winston. Additionally, Fisher knows Florida State’s expectations and understands the pressure surrounding the program. However, his departure for Texas A&M in 2017 created considerable tension. His eventual dismissal at Texas A&M also raised questions about his ability to manage today’s college football landscape. Nevertheless, Fisher’s championship experience makes him an intriguing possibility.
Jake Dickert — Wake Forest
Dickert represents another attractive option. The Wake Forest head coach has demonstrated his ability to develop talent and build competitive teams. Furthermore, his experience within the ACC could help him transition into Florida State’s demanding environment. Dickert has produced impressive results despite working with fewer resources than several conference rivals. However, the Seminoles must determine whether his success would translate into championship contention. His defensive background could also address Florida State’s recent struggles.
Deion Sanders — Colorado
Few candidates would generate more national attention than Deion Sanders. The former Florida State superstar remains one of the most recognizable personalities in college football. Sanders previously built a successful program at Jackson State before accepting Colorado’s head coaching position. Furthermore, his recruiting connections and national popularity could immediately energize Florida State’s fan base. However, questions surround his ability to deliver consistent results against elite competition. Hiring Sanders would represent a significant gamble. Nevertheless, his Florida State connection makes him impossible to ignore.
Glenn Schumann — Georgia Defensive Coordinator
Schumann represents a different direction for Florida State. The Georgia defensive coordinator has helped develop some of college football’s most dominant defensive units. Additionally, his experience under Kirby Smart provides valuable insight into building championship programs. However, Schumann has never served as a college head coach. Florida State would need confidence in his ability to manage recruiting, staffing, and an entire football operation. Still, his defensive expertise makes him an interesting candidate.
Brian Hartline — South Florida
Another interesting possibility involves USF head coach Brian Hartline. Hartline developed a strong recruiting reputation during his time at Ohio State. Furthermore, he helped develop several outstanding receivers, including Jeremiah Smith. His move to South Florida gave him an opportunity to establish his credentials as a head coach. However, Hartline remains relatively inexperienced in that position. Florida State could consider his recruiting ability and offensive background attractive qualities.
Rick Stockstill Takes Over
Meanwhile, Rick Stockstill will guide Florida State through the remainder of the season. Stockstill previously played quarterback for the Seminoles under Bobby Bowden. Additionally, he spent 18 seasons as Middle Tennessee State’s head coach. His experience should provide some stability during a difficult transition. However, Stockstill faces an immediate challenge. Florida State travels to Boston College on November 7, hoping to end its road struggles. The Seminoles have not won a road game since 2023. Therefore, Stockstill must quickly restore confidence inside the locker room.
Florida State Must Get This Hire Right
Florida State remains one of college football’s most recognizable programs. The Seminoles have won three national championships and produced numerous NFL stars. However, their recent struggles have damaged the program’s national standing. Furthermore, the changing college football landscape makes this coaching decision especially important. The next coach must understand NIL opportunities, the transfer portal, recruiting, and player development. Additionally, Florida State needs someone capable of competing against Miami, Clemson, and other ACC contenders.
