Week 8 of the college football season delivered maximum high-stakes drama, late-game heroics, and massive national rankings shifts. From top-ranked powerhouses staving off upset bids to heavy underdog spoilers knocking off top-five contenders, the Saturday slate rewrote playoff narratives across the country.
Of all the things we have learned this college football season, there is no clear #1, even with teh Hurricanes winning and winning. Who will shift gears and stand out among the best of the best? Let’s take a look at how some of the teams in the AP Top 25 did.
Fletcher’s Fourth-Down Score and Lightfoot’s Turnover Preserve No. 1 Miami’s Unbeaten Streak (38-35)
Top-ranked Miami survived its toughest test of the season, rallying past North Carolina 38-35 in a Chapel Hill thriller. Trailing in the fourth quarter after the Tar Heels mounted a grinding 16-play touchdown drive that consumed nearly eight and a half minutes, the Hurricanes found themselves on the brink of a historic upset.
Facing fourth-and-goal at the 2-yard line with 7:49 left, Miami running back Mark Fletcher Jr. punched through the line for the go-ahead touchdown. On the ensuing possession, Miami defensive lineman Marquise Lightfoot came up with the game-breaking defensive takeaway to halt North Carolina’s final momentum. Hurricanes quarterback Darian Mensah threw multiple touchdown passes, including an early scoring strike to wide receiver Malachi Toney, as Miami avoided becoming UNC’s first-ever win against a No. 1-ranked opponent in 12 attempts.
Jayden Maiava and Freshman Trent Mosley Lead USC to Shocking Upset of No. 2 Ohio State (30-18)
In a marquee Big Ten clash at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, the USC Trojans handed No. 2 Ohio State a 30-18 defeat behind explosive playmaking from their young core. On just the second play from scrimmage, USC quarterback Jayden Maiava connected with freshman wide receiver Trent Mosley on a 69-yard touchdown pass. Mosley finished the day with five catches for 101 yards.
The Trojans blew the game open in the second half after Ohio State running back Isaiah West fumbled deep in USC territory. USC responded with a jaw-dropping sequence when freshman tight end Mark Bowman broke multiple tackles and hurdled a defender on a 70-yard reception, setting up a goal-line touchdown run by Miller that put the Trojans up 27-9 to seal the victory.

Paddy McAteer’s 60-Yard Field Goal and Grant Wilson’s OT Strike Elevate No. 4 Indiana Over Minnesota (23-16)
No. 4 Indiana kept its spotless record intact through sheer resilience, edging Minnesota 23-16 in overtime at Memorial Stadium. With no time remaining in regulation and trailing by three, Hoosiers kicker Paddy McAteer drilled a 60-yard field goal to tie the game at 16-16 and force overtime.
On the first play of overtime, backup quarterback Grant Wilson lofted a 25-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Charlie Becker. Becker enjoyed a career day, catching eight passes for 149 yards and the decisive score. Indiana’s defense then held firm on a goal-line stand, stopping Minnesota quarterback Drake Lindsey (20-of-37, 120 yards, 1 TD) on fourth down to cap the dramatic victory.
Steve Angeli Hits Noah Meyers With 17 Seconds Left as Syracuse Upsets No. 19 SMU (30-27)
Inside the JMA Wireless Dome, the Syracuse Orange pulled off a 30-27 upset victory over No. 19 SMU. Trailing 27-23 with 3:36 remaining, Syracuse quarterback Steve Angeli engineered a clutch 68-yard drive to move the Orange into the red zone.
With just 17 seconds left on the clock, Angeli found tight end Noah Meyers on a 2-yard touchdown pass to cap off the game-winning drive. Angeli’s late-game composure snapped the Mustangs’ four-game winning streak and leveled Syracuse’s record at 4-4.
Tommy Castellanos Ignites No. 13 Texas Tech to 34-26 Big 12 Win Over No. 22 Arizona
Earning the starting nod over Will Hammond, dual-threat quarterback Tommy Castellanos delivered a masterclass to lead No. 13 Texas Tech past No. 22 Arizona 34-26 in Lubbock. Castellanos threw two touchdown passes—including a 24-yard strike to Terrance Carter Jr.—and rushed for 117 yards and a touchdown.
Arizona quarterback Noah Fifita threw for 417 yards, including a highlight 94-yard touchdown pass to Isaiah Mizell, but overthrew a critical fourth-and-1 pass late in the fourth quarter. Texas Tech defensive lineman Ansel Nedore provided a key swing play by blocking an extra point earlier in the half, and Quinten Joyner recovered Arizona’s late onside kick attempt to wrap up the win.
