As the NCAA Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) regular season turns into the home stretch, Week 9 delivered high-stakes, pulse-pounding drama across the nation. Championship hopefuls faced stern tests on Saturday, with undefeated contenders, rival powerhouse programs, and historic individual milestones hanging in the balance. It was a weekend that showed how they play the games. Why you have to prepare for your opponent is because you never know when they may have a god day at your expense.
Anderson’s Late Touchdown Pass Keeps Undefeated Tarleton State Alive Over EKU (28-24)
In Stephenville, Texas, the undefeated and top-ranked Tarleton State Texans survived their stiffest challenge of the season, edging Eastern Kentucky 28-24 in a thriller that came down to the final possession.
The Colonels threatened to erase Tarleton’s spotless record on the strength of dual-threat quarterback Myles Burkett, who went 11-of-17 passing for 248 yards and a touchdown while adding a staggering 63-yard touchdown run to lead EKU’s attack. Combined with Jayden West’s explosive two catches for 105 yards, EKU put the Texans on high alert late into the fourth quarter.
However, Tarleton State quarterback Trevon Anderson delivered the game-defining stroke. Despite throwing two interceptions earlier in the contest, Anderson completed 18 of 32 passes for 351 yards, orchestrating a go-ahead touchdown drive late in the fourth quarter. Anderson’s primary weapon, wideout Marquis Willis, torched the secondary for 173 receiving yards on four catches—including a pivotal 27-yard touchdown catch—while Tanner Schmidt hauled in eight receptions for 107 yards. Eastern Kentucky turned the ball over on downs on its final drive, sealing Tarleton State’s 13th win in their last 14 home games.
South Dakota State Races Out Early, Holds Off South Dakota Rally (31-21)
At Dana J. Dykhouse Stadium in Brookings, South Dakota State built a commanding 28-point cushion before thwarting a late comeback by rival No. 6 South Dakota to capture a 31-21 victory.
Jackrabbits quarterback Chase Mason set the tone early by tossing two touchdown passes, while the thunder-and-lightning backfield tandem of Josiah Johnson (126 rushing yards, one touchdown) and James Basinger (84 rushing yards, one touchdown) combined for over 200 yards on the ground. Wide receivers Jack Smith and Grahm Goering added 84 receiving yards apiece to establish early offensive control.
South Dakota refused to go away quietly. Coyotes quarterback Austyn Modrzewski completed 21 of 27 passes for 233 yards and three second-half touchdowns, connecting with Bryce Cohoon on a 59-yard scoring strike and finding Chris Herrin and Brayden White for key touchdowns to slice the deficit to 10. However, the Jackrabbits’ pass rush, powered by defensive lineman Reis Kirschenman (two sacks, one forced fumble), quelled the Coyotes’ final surge to notch South Dakota State’s 11th win in their last 14 meetings against their in-state rival.
Beau Brungard Rallies Youngstown State Past North Dakota (31-28)
In a high-scoring Missouri Valley Football Conference clash at Stambaugh Stadium, Youngstown State quarterback Beau Brungard engineered a brilliant second-half rally to lift the Penguins past North Dakota 31-28.
The Fighting Hawks stayed in step behind quarterback Jerry Kaminski, who threw for 195 yards and accounted for two total touchdowns (one passing, one rushing), while running back Matt Lawson carved up 99 rushing yards on 17 carries. Wide receiver Deng Deng chipped in seven receptions for 84 yards to keep North Dakota ahead late in the third quarter.
Brungard proved unstoppable when the Penguins needed him most. Finishing with 268 passing yards and three touchdowns through the air alongside 64 rushing yards, Brungard repeatedly connected with wideout Lynn Wyche-El. Wyche-El produced an extraordinary performance, catching six passes for 148 yards and all three of Brungard’s touchdown passes. A late interception by Penguins defensive back Maximillian Johnson halted North Dakota’s final drive and preserved Youngstown State’s narrow victory.

Yoder Sets Lehigh Career Records in Dramatic Win Over Bucknell (31-30)
In Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, No. 19 Lehigh survived a wild Patriot League thriller at Goodman Stadium, defeating Bucknell 31-30 on a last-second goal-line stand.
The afternoon belonged to Mountain Hawks senior running back Luke Yoder, who put together a historic performance. Yoder rushed for 183 yards on 31 carries and two touchdowns, officially becoming Lehigh’s all-time leading rusher with 4,338 career yards while tying the school record for career rushing touchdowns (46). His 11-yard touchdown run with 3:05 remaining gave Lehigh a late lead before Connor Poole tacked on a 33-yard field goal.
Bucknell answered immediately behind quarterback Sam Milligan, who threw for a touchdown, rushed for a touchdown, and caught nine passes for 122 yards and two receiving scores. Trailing by one after Milligan’s late touchdown drive with two seconds on the clock, Bucknell elected to go for the win. However, Lehigh defensive back Luke Denny batted down Milligan’s potential game-winning two-point conversion pass in the end zone to preserve the dramatic one-point victory.
