CHICAGO — Under the prime-time lights of Soldier Field, two of the top picks from the 2024 NFL Draft met for the second time in their young careers. In a fast-paced, high-stakes battle of talented signal-callers, quarterback Caleb Williams threw for 308 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Chicago Bears (5-2) to a thrilling 30-24 victory over Drake Maye and the New England Patriots (4-3).
The atmosphere in Chicago carried an emotional charge, as the franchise honored legendary Hall of Fame coach Mike Ditka. The Bears’ defense set the tone early when nickel back Kyler Gordon came up with a fourth-down sack on Maye during New England’s opening possession, handing Williams and the offense short-field position.
Williams and Burden Ignite Explosive Pass Attack
Making his second start back from a right hamstring injury, Williams displayed dynamic pocket movement and deep-ball precision. His top target on the night was rookie receiver Luther Burden III, who put together an electric first half with four receptions for 130 yards and a touchdown.
Burden’s signature moment came on a third-and-17 screen play, where tight end Colston Loveland, wideout Kalif Raymond, and offensive tackle Darnell Wright led a convoy downfield, allowing Burden to break a tackle and accelerate for a score. Loveland added seven catches for 69 yards and a 12-yard touchdown reception, while running back D’Andre Swift paced the ground game with 68 rushing yards.
Despite facing constant pressure from Bears defensive end Austin Booker, Maye kept New England competitive by throwing for 321 yards and two touchdowns while adding a 7-yard rushing score. Maye connected with Rhamondre Stevenson on a 48-yard touchdown pass as time expired in the first half to trim Chicago’s lead to 20-14.

The Game-Breaking Moment: Santos Anchors Late-Game Finish
After the Patriots cut Chicago’s lead to 27-21 in the fourth quarter, the Bears faced a pressure-packed moment following a missed 53-yard field goal attempt by Cairo Santos. With 1:34 remaining, head coach Ben Johnson put his trust back in Santos on a 58-yard attempt.
Santos drilled the kick straight down the middle to tie the franchise record for longest field goal and give Chicago a nine-point cushion. New England responded with Andy Borregales’ 47-yard field goal with 37 seconds remaining, but Rome Odunze secured the ensuing onside kick to lock up the win. The victory came with a cost for Chicago, as tight end Cole Kmet left in the fourth quarter with a right knee injury.
Playoff Positioning & NFC North Picture
Chicago’s fourth consecutive victory pushes them to 5-2, firmly entrenching the Bears in the NFC North race alongside the Detroit Lions and Minnesota Vikings. Winning on a short week provides critical tiebreaker cushion in the crowded NFC playoff picture as the season approaches its midseason mark.
For New England, the loss drops them to 4-3. While Maye continues to demonstrate elite upside, the Patriots face a tight AFC East battle where every conference loss shrinks their wild-card margin for error ahead of next week’s matchup against Miami.
