INDIANAPOLIS — With the NFL trade deadline approaching, the phone lines in Indianapolis are heating up. Multiple teams have expressed trade interest in Indianapolis Colts star running back Jonathan Taylor, according to ESPN’s Stephen Holder.
The surge in trade interest follows major organizational upheaval inside the Colts’ facility. After a disappointing 2-4 start to the 2026 regular season, Indianapolis dismissed general manager Chris Ballard and elevated Ed Dodds to interim general manager. As head coach Shane Steichen attempts to steady the ship on the field, rival front offices are actively testing whether Indianapolis is preparing to sell off marquee assets before the trade deadline.
However, it remains unclear whether Dodds and team ownership are actually ready to part ways with top talent or if they intend to keep their core intact.
Taylor’s Stellar Production Drives Market Demand
Despite the Colts’ team-wide struggles, Taylor remains one of the premier offensive weapons in professional football. Through the first six games of the season, the 27-year-old running back has carried the rock 122 times for 492 rushing yards and seven touchdowns, while adding 15 receptions for 163 yards through the air.
Taylor holds the highest career rushing yards per game average among active NFL players at 89.9 yards per contest. Fresh off a 2025 campaign in which he led the league in carries (323) and rushing touchdowns (18), Taylor signed a contract extension in August that locks him into Indianapolis through 2028. That long-term stability makes him an enticing target for postseason contenders searching for an elite, high-volume back to solidify a championship run.

Taylor “Staying Focused” Amid Roster Uncertainty
When asked directly on Thursday about the trade chatter surrounding his future in Indianapolis, Taylor shut down speculation, emphasizing his commitment to his team.
“I haven’t given any thought,” Taylor told reporters. “That’d be crazy right now, especially because we’ve got a great Minnesota Vikings team that we have to go against. I think it would be a discredit and a disservice to my teammates and this whole organization to think about what could, what should, what may be.”
Taylor later reinforced his mindset with a concise two-word social media post featuring game-day photos: “Staying focused.”
Broader Trade Talks Horizon for Indianapolis
Taylor isn’t the only blue-chip veteran drawing inquiries as rival franchises audit the Colts’ roster. Defensive tackle DeForest Buckner and six-time All-Pro offensive guard Quenton Nelson have also surfaced in league trade discussions. Buckner, who faces impending free agency at the end of the year, acknowledged the business side of the sport, stating, “We’ll see. If that happens, we’ll see how it goes.”
With upcoming games against the Minnesota Vikings and Jacksonville Jaguars, the next two weeks will dictate whether the Colts attempt a second-half push or pivot toward a full rebuild under interim leadership. If Indianapolis drops further out of contention in the AFC South, pressure will mount to capitalize on Taylor’s massive market value before the deadline.
