The South Florida Bulls have little time to dwell on their first loss of the 2026 season. USF travels to San Antonio for a Thursday night showdown against the UTSA Roadrunners. The American Conference matchup kicks off at 7:30 p.m. Eastern on ESPN. Both teams enter the game with identical 4-1 overall records. However, UTSA sits at 1-0 in conference play. Meanwhile, USF enters at 1-1 after Saturday’s heartbreaking loss against Temple. The Bulls lost 17-13 after holding a fourth-quarter lead against the Owls. Temple drove 96 yards for the winning touchdown late in the game. Now, head coach Brian Hartline faces another difficult challenge. This one comes inside the Alamodome, where UTSA rarely loses conference games.
UTSA’s Incredible Home Advantage
The biggest storyline surrounding Thursday’s game involves UTSA’s remarkable home record. Since 2020, UTSA has gone 25-1 in conference home games. That statistic makes Thursday’s challenge considerably tougher for Hartline’s team. The Alamodome has developed into one of the American Conference’s toughest environments. USF already knows how difficult winning there can become. The Bulls made their first trip to UTSA during the 2023 season. That night turned into a historic performance for Roadrunners quarterback Frank Harris. UTSA defeated USF 49-21 behind 643 yards of total offense. Harris accounted for 523 total yards and six touchdowns. He threw for 411 yards and three touchdowns. Additionally, Harris rushed for 112 yards and three more scores. USF quarterback Byrum Brown threw for 287 yards during that loss. He also rushed for 43 yards and scored once. However, USF delivered a very different result when UTSA visited Tampa last season.

Bulls Dominated Last Year’s Meeting
USF crushed UTSA 55-23 at Raymond James Stadium on November 6, 2025. The Bulls scored two defensive touchdowns before their offense even took the field. USF eventually built a commanding 45-10 halftime advantage. Brown produced another outstanding performance that night. He completed 14 of 15 passes for 239 yards and two touchdowns. Brown also rushed for 109 yards and another score. Meanwhile, the USF defense overwhelmed UTSA. The Bulls recorded six sacks and 12 tackles for loss. They also limited the Roadrunners to only 72 rushing yards. Those two results leave the all-time series tied at one victory apiece. Interestingly, the home team has dominated both meetings. Thursday provides USF with an opportunity to finally change that trend.
USF Offense Needs a Faster Start
The Bulls cannot afford another sluggish offensive beginning. USF scored only three first-half points against Temple. The Bulls generated just 108 yards and five first downs before halftime. Michael Van Buren Jr. eventually completed 17 of 32 passes for 205 yards. However, USF finished with only 319 total yards. D.J. Crowther scored USF’s only touchdown on a one-yard run. Temple also limited him to 68 yards on 23 carries. USF cannot consistently ask its defense to rescue slow offensive starts. The Bulls have already needed second-half rallies multiple times this season. That formula finally failed against Temple. Furthermore, penalties continue hurting important possessions. USF committed eight penalties for 60 yards against the Owls. Those mistakes become even more damaging inside a hostile road environment. Hartline needs his offense to establish rhythm immediately Thursday night.

USF Defense Faces Another Challenge
Fortunately, USF’s defense continues playing strong football. The Bulls held Temple to only 274 total yards. Temple also converted just five of 12 third-down attempts. Grayson “Pup” Howard recorded a career-high nine tackles. C.J. Hicks added seven tackles and recovered a crucial fumble. However, the defense surrendered one costly drive. Temple marched 96 yards late in the fourth quarter for the winning touchdown. USF cannot allow similar breakdowns Thursday. UTSA enters after beating Rice 16-14 in its conference opener. The Roadrunners produced 314 total yards, including 166 rushing yards. Will Henderson III led UTSA with 90 rushing yards and one touchdown. Quarterback Owen McCown completed 19 of 29 passes for 148 yards. Meanwhile, UTSA’s defense held Rice to only 232 total yards. The Roadrunners also collected 10 tackles for loss and three sacks. Therefore, USF’s offensive line faces another important test.
A Major American Conference Game
USF’s loss to Temple increased the importance of Thursday night’s game. A second consecutive conference loss would put the Bulls in an uncomfortable position. Meanwhile, winning in San Antonio could immediately restore momentum. UTSA also has plenty at stake. The Roadrunners have started 4-1 for their best five-game opening since 2021. They also want to protect their extraordinary conference home record. Something must give Thursday night. USF has won both road games this season, beating Army and Bowling Green. UTSA almost never loses conference games inside the Alamodome.
The first two USF-UTSA meetings produced comfortable victories for the home team. This matchup feels much different. USF needs better offensive execution, fewer penalties, and another strong defensive performance. Most importantly, the Bulls need to start quickly. Falling behind inside the Alamodome could create problems against a confident UTSA team. USF already learned that lesson during its 2023 trip to San Antonio. Thursday provides Hartline and his Bulls with an opportunity to write a different ending.
Let’s see how the South Florida Bulls bounce back and have their first true test in the 2026 season.
