SAN FRANCISCO — The defending champion Las Vegas Aces arrived at Chase Center on Sunday expecting a shootout. Instead, they were locked up in “Valkatraz.”
The Golden State Valkyries’ suffocating team defense put on an absolute masterclass in Game 1 of the 2026 WNBA Semifinals, completely shutting down the league’s most potent offense. Behind a phenomenal two-way performance from Gabby Williams, the expansion Valkyries shocked the Aces 71-60, taking a 1-0 series lead and proving they are legitimate title contenders.
Holding a team featuring A’ja Wilson, Jackie Young, and Chelsea Gray to just 60 points is a monumental achievement. Here is a detailed look at how Golden State secured the massive Game 1 victory.
The “Valkatraz” Defense
The Valkyries’ defensive scheme, affectionately dubbed “Valkatraz” by the Bay Area fanbase, was executed to perfection by head coach Natalie Nakase. The strategy was clear: make life miserable for the Aces’ guards and front the post aggressively to deny A’ja Wilson easy touches.
Golden State held Las Vegas to a dismal 34% shooting from the floor and a shocking 7-of-21 (33%) from beyond the arc. The Valkyries switched seamlessly on the perimeter, completely neutralizing the Aces’ pick-and-roll game. Chelsea Gray, normally the maestro of the Las Vegas offense, was forced into uncharacteristic mistakes, committing five turnovers as Golden State’s guards jumped into passing lanes.
The Valkyries also owned the glass. Despite facing the imposing Las Vegas frontcourt, Golden State out-rebounded the Aces 52-25, effectively ending possessions after one missed shot and preventing the Aces from finding a rhythm through second-chance points.
Gabby Williams Takes Over
While the defense won the game, it was Gabby Williams who provided the necessary offensive spark.
Coming off a heroic fourth-quarter performance in the deciding game against Dallas just two days prior, Williams carried that momentum straight into the semifinals. She poured in a game-high 25 points on highly efficient 9-of-18 shooting, while adding 11 rebounds, constantly attacking the rim and hitting clutch mid-range jumpers whenever the Aces threatened to go on a run.
Doublin’ down on that playoff energy.
Gabby puts up another monster playoff performance 😤

Aces’ Stars Struggle
For Las Vegas, Game 1 was an incredibly frustrating afternoon. A’ja Wilson battled hard inside, finishing with 24 points on 8-21 shooting, but she was forced to work exhaustingly for every single touch against constant double-teams.
The real issue for the Aces was the lack of perimeter production. Jackie Young was held to just 11 points on 4-of-15 shooting, while Chelsea Gray managed 16 points but shot 5-of-14. Las Vegas simply could not find any spacing against the length and athleticism of the Golden State wings.
What’s Next?
The Valkyries have successfully defended their home court and put the defending champions on notice. However, beating a Becky Hammon-coached team twice in a row is one of the hardest tasks in professional sports.
The Aces will undoubtedly head to the film room to figure out how to break the “Valkatraz” press and generate easier looks for their shooters. Game 2 is set for Tuesday night at Chase Center, and Las Vegas will be desperate to steal a road win before the series shifts back to Nevada.
