College football delivered another thrilling Saturday slate yesterday, featuring offensive explosions, dramatic down-to-the-wire finishes, and several key Top 25 matchups. As the calendar flipped to October, the playoff picture is starting to take shape.
Here is a detailed recap of Saturday’s biggest games and Top 25 action across the country.
Alabama 56, Mississippi State 23
The Crimson Tide looked every bit like a national championship contender, going on the road to Davis Wade Stadium and completely dismantling the Bulldogs 56-23.
Alabama’s offense was practically unstoppable, racking up 483 total yards while showing incredible balance. Quarterback Keelon Russell orchestrated the blowout beautifully, throwing for 285 yards and three touchdowns while adding another score on the ground. The Tide’s receiving corps overwhelmed the Bulldogs’ secondary, with Lotzeir Brooks hauling in four catches for 96 yards and Ryan Coleman-Williams adding a touchdown.
Mississippi State’s quarterback Kamario Taylor fought valiantly, passing for 258 yards and three touchdowns. However, the relentless Alabama pass rush sacked him five times and forced two crucial interceptions. USC 25, Washington 21
In a gritty, defensive battle at the LA Memorial Coliseum, the USC Trojans survived a late scare to defeat the Washington Huskies 25-21.
The game was a tight, back-and-forth affair that relied heavily on execution in the trenches. USC quarterback Jayden Maiava managed the game effectively, throwing for 245 yards, one touchdown, and one interception. The Trojans found success on the ground thanks to running back King Miller, who chewed up the clock with 81 rushing yards on 18 carries.
Washington struggled to find a consistent rhythm against a physical USC defense that racked up five sacks. Huskies quarterback Demond Williams Jr. was under constant duress, finishing with 198 passing yards and a touchdown. Running back Brian Bonner Jr. was a bright spot for Washington, gashing the Trojans for 89 yards on 19 carries, but the offense stalled out in the red zone when it mattered most.
Kentucky 35, South Carolina 34
The game of the day took place in Columbia, where the Kentucky Wildcats pulled off a thrilling 35-34 one-point road victory over the South Carolina Gamecocks.
Kentucky’s passing attack was highly efficient, led by quarterback Kenny Minchey, who threw for 272 yards, three touchdowns, and zero interceptions. Minchey continuously found his playmakers in stride, with Kenny Darby erupting for an incredible 12 catches, 96 yards, and a touchdown. Nic Anderson also provided a spark, hauling in five catches for 80 yards and a score.
For South Carolina, the loss spoils an absolute masterclass from quarterback LaNorris Sellers. Sellers was a dual-threat nightmare for the Wildcats’ defense, throwing for 226 yards and two touchdowns while exploding for 147 rushing yards on 17 carries. Despite outgaining Kentucky 458-394 in total yardage, the Gamecocks’ two costly turnovers ultimately proved to be the difference in a heart-stopping finish.
