Week 6 brought plenty of action across Pinellas County high school football. Several teams made statements, while others faced tough setbacks. Clearwater continued its unbeaten run with another dominant defensive performance. Meanwhile, Countryside bounced back in a major way. Tarpon Springs also picked up an important district victory. Here is a look at the biggest results from Week 6.
Clearwater Continues Perfect Start
Clearwater remained perfect after shutting out Northeast 41-0. The Tornadoes improved to 6-0 with another strong defensive showing. Clearwater entered the game after beating Largo 24-14 the previous week. However, Northeast struggled to generate anything against the Tornadoes. Clearwater controlled the game from start to finish. The win also kept Clearwater firmly in the mix within Class 4A. The Tornadoes have allowed only 36 points through six games. That number highlights their defensive consistency. Clearwater also owns wins over East Lake, St. Petersburg, Countryside, Largo and Northeast. That schedule has given the Tornadoes plenty of momentum heading into October.
Countryside Bounces Back
Countryside delivered one of the night’s biggest performances. The Cougars crushed Anclote 49-0 in a District 3A-11 matchup. Quarterback Cam Waddington led the offensive explosion. Waddington threw for 262 yards and five touchdowns. He also added a rushing touchdown. Kai Johnson created more problems for the Anclote defense. He finished with 143 receiving yards and three touchdowns. The defense also dominated throughout the night. Countryside recorded seven sacks against the Sharks. Several defenders contributed to that total. The victory moved Countryside to 4-2 on the season. It also provided a strong response after the Cougars lost 44-7 to Boca Ciega.
Tarpon Springs Takes Care of Dunedin
Tarpon Springs picked up another district victory with a 24-8 win over Dunedin. The Spongers controlled the game early and carried a 24-0 advantage into the fourth quarter. Dunedin finally found the end zone late. However, the Falcons could not complete the comeback. Tarpon Springs improved to 4-2 with the victory. The Spongers have also won three of their last four road games. The victory keeps Tarpon Springs in the District 3A-11 conversation. Dunedin, meanwhile, dropped to 1-4 after suffering its fourth straight loss.
St. Petersburg Beats Pinellas Park
St. Petersburg picked up a 24-13 victory over Pinellas Park on Thursday. The Green Devils improved to 3-2 with their second straight victory. Pinellas Park fell to 2-3 after the loss. The Patriots had previously earned wins over Dunedin and Osceola. However, St. Petersburg found enough offense to pull away. The Green Devils also continued their recent momentum after beating Gibbs the previous week. Pinellas Park now turns its attention toward Seminole. That matchup gives the Patriots another chance to get back on track.
Largo Falls to Gaither
Largo suffered its second straight loss with a 31-14 defeat against Gaither. The Cowboys earned their first road victory of the season. Gaither improved to 4-2 after the win. The Cowboys have also won 14 of their last 17 games dating back to last season. Largo dropped to 4-2 after opening the season with four straight victories. The Packers now face Dunedin in their next game. That contest gives Largo an opportunity to stop its current two-game slide.
Osceola Edges Hollins
Osceola picked up a close 24-21 victory over Hollins. The Royals produced their highest scoring total of the season. However, Osceola still held on for the victory. Hollins entered the game looking for its first victory. Instead, the Royals fell to 0-6. Osceola improved to 1-4 with the three-point win. The victory gives the Warriors some momentum heading into the next part of their schedule.
Boca Ciega Falls Short Against Calvary
Boca Ciega entered the game riding momentum after beating Countryside. However, Calvary Christian escaped with a 23-21 victory. The Pirates controlled much of their recent stretch, but Calvary found enough offense to secure the district win. Boca Ciega fell to 3-2 following the narrow defeat. Calvary Christian improved to 4-1. The Warriors have now won 10 of their last 12 games dating back to last season. That win also gave Calvary an important District 2A-6 victory.
Indian Rocks Christian Wins Again
Indian Rocks Christian continued its turnaround with a 43-26 win over North Florida Christian. The Golden Eagles scored their highest point total of the season. The victory marked their second straight win. Indian Rocks Christian had started the season with four consecutive losses. Now, the Golden Eagles have built some momentum heading into October. The offense played a major role in the turnaround. The 43 points also showed how much the Eagles improved after their earlier struggles.
Palm Harbor University Takes a Tough Loss
Palm Harbor University faced a difficult matchup against Alonso. The Ravens defeated the Hurricanes 51-0. Palm Harbor University entered the game after beating Hollins 47-8. However, Alonso controlled this matchup from the opening kickoff. The loss dropped the Hurricanes to 1-4. They now face another important stretch as they look to regain momentum.
Week 6 Takeaway
Week 6 produced several important developments across Pinellas County. Clearwater continued its perfect season with another shutout. Countryside responded to its previous loss with a 49-point explosion. Tarpon Springs strengthened its district position with another victory. St. Petersburg also continued its recent surge against Pinellas Park. Meanwhile, Largo, Palm Harbor University and Boca Ciega suffered setbacks. As October approaches, the games carry even more weight. District races will begin taking shape across the county. For several Pinellas teams, the next few weeks could define their seasons.
