The Tampa Bay Rays are one step closer to building their new home in Tampa. Both Tampa and Hillsborough County approved the stadium deal this week. The Tampa City Council voted 4-3 Thursday to approve its portion. Then, the Hillsborough County Commission followed Friday. Commissioners approved the deal by a 5-2 vote. Those votes clear a major hurdle for the Rays proposed new stadium. The $2.36 billion project would sit on Hillsborough College’s Dale Mabry campus. It would also anchor a larger mixed-use development around the ballpark. The project represents years of discussions about the Rays’ future. Now, those discussions have reached a major turning point.
Tampa’s Vote Comes First
The Tampa City Council faced a difficult decision Thursday. Council members debated the stadium agreement before taking the final vote. Four members voted in favor of the proposal. Alan Clendenin, Naya Young, Luis Viera and Bill Carlson supported the deal. Meanwhile, Lynn Hurtak, Guido Maniscalco and Charlie Miranda voted against it. The 4-3 result showed just how divided the council remained. Still, the vote gave the Rays the approval they needed from Tampa. The city’s contribution totals $80 million under the revised agreement. The Rays also agreed to cover another $100 million originally assigned to Tampa. That change helped make the latest proposal more appealing to city officials. Mayor Jane Castor praised the council members who supported the agreement. She highlighted jobs, investment and economic development as major benefits. The Rays also welcomed the decision. Team officials called it an important step toward securing their future.
Hillsborough County Delivers
The next major vote came Friday morning. The Hillsborough County Commission considered its part of the agreement. Commissioners ultimately approved the deal by a 5-2 vote. That approval provided the project’s biggest piece of public funding. Hillsborough County could contribute up to $796 million toward the project. The funding would rely primarily on existing tax revenue sources. Those sources include a half-cent sales tax and tourist development taxes. The county’s contribution far exceeds Tampa’s financial commitment. However, the Rays would provide the majority of the overall project funding. The team expects to contribute roughly $1.37 billion. The Rays also agreed to cover construction cost overruns. That provision gives taxpayers additional protection against unexpected expenses.
A New Home in Tampa
The proposed stadium would become part of a 113-acre development. The site sits on Hillsborough College’s Dale Mabry campus. The development would include the new ballpark and surrounding mixed-use projects. Hillsborough College would also receive significant facility improvements. The college has emphasized its need for upgraded facilities. Officials also see opportunities for workforce development through the project. That creates benefits extending beyond baseball for the local community. Supporters believe the development could create jobs and attract additional investment. Opponents remain concerned about the public cost. Some critics argue taxpayers should not finance professional sports facilities. Others questioned the speed of the approval process. Those concerns did not stop either governing body from approving the deal.
The Rays’ Future Finally Has a Direction
The Rays have searched for a permanent home for years. Previous stadium proposals failed for various financial and political reasons. The latest proposal appears to have overcome those obstacles. The team now has approval from both Tampa and Hillsborough County. That does not mean every step has finished. Several agreements and project milestones still remain. However, the biggest local government hurdle has now been cleared. The Rays are targeting Opening Day 2029 for the new ballpark.
That timeline gives the organization limited room for delays. Construction will need to move forward quickly to meet that goal. For Rays fans, Friday’s vote represents a significant moment. The franchise finally has a clear path toward a new Tampa home. After years of uncertainty, the Rays can now focus on the future. The 4-3 Tampa vote started the final push. The 5-2 Hillsborough County vote finished the biggest local approval process. Now, the next chapter of the Rays’ stadium saga can begin.
