The Tampa Bay Rays enter Detroit needing a strong response. Tampa Bay just finished difficult series against the Toronto Blue Jays and Baltimore Orioles. The Rays went 1-2 against both opponents. That stretch tested Tampa Bay on both sides of the ball. Now, the Rays turn their attention toward the Detroit Tigers. The three-game series begin Monday at Comerica Park. Tampa Bay enters the matchup with the American League’s best record. However, the Rays need to regain some momentum.
Rays Split the Stretch with Toronto
The Blue Jays opened their three-game series with a 10-5 victory. Toronto jumped on Tampa Bay’s pitching early and never surrendered the lead. Kazuma Okamoto also made history during the game. His solo homer gave him 25 home runs this season. That blast broke Toronto’s rookie home run record. The Rays battled back during the game. Taylor Walls delivered a two-run single during the fourth inning. Tampa Bay also scored twice during the eighth inning. However, Toronto’s early advantage proved too much. The Rays responded with a much-needed win Wednesday.
Tampa Bay defeated Toronto 7-6 in a high-scoring battle. Yandy Díaz hit a home run in the victory. Drew Rasmussen also earned his sixth straight win. That victory gave Tampa Bay a chance to win the series. Unfortunately, Toronto answered in the finale. The Blue Jays defeated the Rays 5-1 on Thursday. Toronto’s offense continued producing timely hits. Tampa Bay struggled to generate enough offense against the Blue Jays. The loss gave Toronto a 2-1 series victory. Still, Tampa Bay had already dominated the season matchup. The Rays entered the finale having won nine of 12 games against Toronto.
Baltimore Creates More Problems
The Rays then faced another difficult American League East opponent. Baltimore took the opener 5-3 on Friday night. Pete Alonso delivered the biggest blow for the Orioles. Alonso hit a go-ahead two-run homer in the fifth inning. The blast marked his 30th home run of the season. Trevor Rogers also delivered a strong performance for Baltimore. He struck out six batters across seven innings. Tampa Bay struggled to sustain offensive pressure throughout the game. The Orioles then won again Saturday. Baltimore edged Tampa Bay 3-2 in the second game. That loss put the Rays in danger of another series defeat. Tampa Bay needed a strong response Sunday.
Nick Martinez Stops the Slide
The Rays finally got that response in the series finale. Nick Martinez delivered one of Tampa Bay’s most important starts recently. He threw six one-hit innings against Baltimore. Martinez allowed no runs and no walks. He also struck out four Orioles hitters. That performance helped Tampa Bay secure a 3-1 victory. The Rays broke the scoreless tie during the sixth inning. Yandy Díaz started the rally with a key hit. Jonathan Aranda and Junior Caminero followed with timely contributions. Chandler Simpson then delivered an RBI single.
Tampa Bay scored three runs during the inning. Meanwhile, the defense helped protect the lead. Johnny DeLuca made two outstanding plays in the outfield. Those catches prevented Baltimore from creating additional scoring opportunities. Bryan Baker then closed the door in the ninth inning. The save marked Baker’s 37th of the season. That total leads the majors. The victory also prevented Baltimore from sweeping Tampa Bay.
Detroit Now Awaits
The Rays now head into a three-game series against Detroit. Tampa Bay opens the series Monday at Comerica Park. Drew Rasmussen is scheduled to start for the Rays. Detroit enters the series after losing five straight games. The Tigers sit fourth in the American League Central. That gives Tampa Bay an opportunity to regain momentum. However, the Rays cannot overlook Detroit. Tampa Bay just played six straight games against divisional opponents. Those games exposed some offensive and pitching inconsistencies. The Rays also need their rotation to stay strong. Martinez provided a major lift Sunday after the team endured several difficult outings. The bullpen also remains important during this stretch. Baker continues giving Tampa Bay a reliable option in the ninth inning. That stability becomes even more valuable during a playoff push.
Rays Need a Strong Detroit Series
The Rays remain in excellent position despite the recent struggles. Tampa Bay still owns the American League’s best record. The team also maintains a lead in the AL East. However, the schedule will only become more important. Every game carries additional weight as September approaches. The Rays need to turn strong regular season play into postseason momentum. Detroit provides the perfect opportunity. A strong series could help Tampa Bay erase some frustration from the previous two series. It could also restore confidence throughout the clubhouse. The Rays showed that ability Sunday against Baltimore. Now, they need to build on it.
Tampa Bay does not need perfection in Detroit. Instead, the Rays need consistent pitching, timely hitting, and clean defense. If those three areas come together, the Rays can leave Detroit with valuable momentum. The postseason remains the ultimate goal. For now, however, the Rays have one immediate task. Beat the Tigers and get back on track.
