Nick Kyrgios faces another major setback after testing positive for cocaine. The International Tennis Integrity Agency announced his provisional suspension Wednesday. Kyrgios also confirmed the news through a statement on Instagram. The positive test came from an ATP 250 tournament in Mallorca, Spain. Kyrgios provided the sample on June 22, 2026. A World Anti-Doping Agency laboratory later confirmed the result. The laboratory detected benzoylecgonine, which is a cocaine metabolite. The ITIA placed Kyrgios under provisional suspension on August 4. The suspension prevents him from competing in professional tennis events. It also prevents him from attending tournaments under the relevant tennis regulations. Kyrgios has the right to appeal the suspension. However, he has not appealed the decision at this point. His case will continue through the sport’s disciplinary process. Therefore, the current suspension does not represent the final outcome of his case.
Kyrgios Takes Responsibility
Kyrgios addressed the situation himself before the news spread further. The Australian admitted that he made a major mistake. He also accepted responsibility for the positive test. The former Wimbledon finalist apologized to several groups. Those included his family, fans, sponsors, and young people who follow him. He also expressed disappointment in himself. Kyrgios also provided some context surrounding his struggles. He pointed toward the physical and mental toll of his recent injuries.
Those problems have kept him away from tennis for extended periods. He also discussed the difficulty of potentially nearing the end of his career. Kyrgios said letting go of tennis has been harder than he expected. He described moments when he felt helpless and alone. Still, Kyrgios did not use those struggles as an excuse. Instead, he called the incident a wake-up call. He plans to step away from social media and public life for 28 days. He wants to use that time to focus on himself and his recovery.
A Difficult Period for Kyrgios
This development adds another chapter to a difficult stretch for Kyrgios. Injuries have severely limited his playing opportunities over the past several years. The Australian once stood among the game’s biggest stars. He reached the Wimbledon final in 2022. Novak Djokovic defeated him in that championship match. Kyrgios also reached a career-high No. 13 ranking. However, injuries changed the direction of his career. Wrist and knee problems have repeatedly disrupted his progress. Those setbacks have made consistent competition extremely difficult. Kyrgios has played very little Grand Slam tennis since his Wimbledon breakthrough. His limited schedule has also raised questions about his long-term future. Now, the positive test creates another serious obstacle. The timing also stands out because Kyrgios recently returned to the spotlight. He competed at Wimbledon this summer alongside Alexander Bublik. The pair lost in the first round. Kyrgios also received a fine for misconduct during the tournament.
What Happens Next?
The biggest question now involves the length and outcome of Kyrgios’ suspension. Cocaine falls under the World Anti-Doping Agency’s prohibited substances. However, the rules can distinguish between in-competition and out-of-competition use. That distinction could become important as Kyrgios’ case moves forward. The current information does not establish a final punishment. Therefore, it would be premature to declare how long Kyrgios will remain away from tennis. Kyrgios can challenge the case through the available appeal process. So far, he has chosen not to appeal. The ITIA will continue handling the matter under its anti-doping rules. For now, Kyrgios has stepped away from public life. His statement suggests he wants to use the situation as a turning point. He also asked people to respect his privacy during that period.
Another Major Moment in a Controversial Career
Kyrgios has never followed the traditional path of a professional tennis star. His talent made him one of the sport’s most recognizable players. His personality also made him one of its most controversial figures. Now, this positive test places his career at another crossroads. Kyrgios must deal with the disciplinary process while considering his future. At 31, his playing career already faces significant uncertainty. Most importantly, the case remains ongoing. Kyrgios admitted the positive test and accepted responsibility for his actions. However, the final disciplinary outcome has not yet arrived. For a player who once reached the Wimbledon final, this represents another difficult chapter. Kyrgios now has an opportunity to determine how he responds. His next steps could shape how fans remember the later stages of his career.
