WWE SmackDown delivered a packed night of fallout from SummerSlam on August 7. The show came from the Xfinity Mobile Arena in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Kevin Owens immediately became the center of attention after his SummerSlam return. Meanwhile, Cody Rhodes continued his issues with Randy Orton. The show also featured three major matches. Baron Corbin defended the United States Championship against Trick Williams. Fatal Influence defended the WWE Women’s Tag Team Championship against Chelsea Green and Tiffany Stratton. Charlotte Flair also faced Jade Cargill in a highly anticipated singles match.
Kevin Owens Confronts CM Punk. Cody Rhodes opened the show by calling out Randy Orton. However, CM Punk interrupted before Rhodes could get his answers. Rhodes told Punk they still had unfinished business. Punk simply told Rhodes to name the time. Then, Kevin Owens made his presence felt. Owens returned at SummerSlam after missing more than a year. A serious neck injury kept him away from WWE during that stretch.
He also earned a major opportunity at SummerSlam. Owens won a Fatal 4-Way match to become Punk’s No. 1 contender. Owens confronted Punk and questioned the champion’s attitude. He argued that Punk remained the same person from their past.
Punk defended his arrogance because he held the Undisputed WWE Championship. Owens then made his intentions clear. He wants to take the championship from Punk. The confrontation also established their next major showdown. Owens challenged Punk for the title on August 21 in Toronto.
Baron Corbin Retains Against Trick Williams. Baron Corbin defended the United States Championship against Trick Williams. Williams entered the match looking to regain the championship. However, Corbin found a way to escape Philadelphia with his title. Corbin defeated Williams and retained the United States Championship. The victory did not end Corbin’s problems. Carmelo Hayes attacked Corbin after the match. Hayes then made his intentions clear. He wants a United States Championship match against Corbin next week.
That confrontation gives the championship picture another major twist. Corbin now has to prepare for another dangerous challenger. Fatal Influence Retains the Women’s Tag Titles. Chelsea Green celebrated her SummerSlam victory with Tiffany Stratton. Green captured the Interim WWE Women’s Championship during SummerSlam’s Ladder Match. She defeated Charlotte Flair, Jade Cargill, Lash Legend and Stratton to win the championship.
However, the celebration quickly turned into another championship fight. Fatal Influence interrupted Green and Stratton. Fallon Henley and Lainey Reid then defended the WWE Women’s Tag Team Championship. Fatal Influence defeated Green and Stratton to retain their titles. The situation became even more chaotic afterward.
Nia Jax and Lash Legend attacked Green and Stratton following the match. Their assault added another layer to the women’s tag team division. Randy Orton Sends a Message to Cody Rhodes Randy Orton finally addressed his actions from SummerSlam.
Orton shocked everyone when he returned and hit Rhodes with an RKO. The attack came during Rhodes’ Undisputed WWE Championship match against Punk. Rhodes refused to let Orton control the conversation. He interrupted Orton and chased him away from the ring.
Orton explained that he wanted Rhodes to see the real Legend Killer. He also warned Rhodes about what could happen next. Orton wants to prevent Rhodes from ever becoming WWE Champion again. Rhodes responded with a threat of his own. He promised to bring out the worst version of himself.
Their rivalry now looks personal. Charlotte Flair Defeats Jade Cargill. Charlotte Flair and Jade Cargill finally settled their differences inside the ring. The two stars entered the match after falling short in SummerSlam’s Interim WWE Women’s Championship Ladder Match. Flair walked away with the victory. The win gives Charlotte important momentum after SummerSlam. Meanwhile, Cargill now has to regroup after another major setback. The rivalry between the two stars still has plenty of unfinished business.
The episode also featured several other important developments. Sami Zayn confronted Nick Aldis about the ongoing situation involving Kevin Owens. Zayn later revealed that he has a broken hand. CM Punk also confronted Zayn during the backstage segment.
Elsewhere, Shinsuke Nakamura called out the MFTs. Nakamura also made it clear that he would not stand alone. WWE also announced several major matches for next week’s SmackDown. Carmelo Hayes will challenge Baron Corbin for the United States Championship. Jacy Jayne will challenge Tiffany Stratton for the Women’s United States Championship.
A Triple Threat Match will also determine the next WWE Tag Team Championship challengers. Damian Priest and R-Truth will face the War Raiders and the MFTs. SmackDown Moves Toward Its Next Chapter Friday’s episode successfully moved several major storylines forward after SummerSlam.
Kevin Owens immediately established himself as CM Punk’s biggest problem. Cody Rhodes also found himself locked into a heated rivalry with Randy Orton. Meanwhile, Charlotte Flair gained momentum with her victory over Jade Cargill. The United States Championship picture also became more crowded. Corbin survived Trick Williams, but Carmelo Hayes quickly stepped forward.
The women’s division delivered plenty of chaos as well. Chelsea Green’s championship celebration ended with another title loss for her and Stratton. With several matches already announced for next week, SmackDown has plenty of momentum. However, the biggest question remains the Undisputed WWE Championship. Kevin Owens waited more than a year for his return. Now, he has his sights firmly set on CM Punk. Their championship showdown could become one of SmackDown’s biggest stories heading into the next major WWE event.
