Tony Romo’s future as CBS Sports’ lead NFL analyst suddenly looks uncertain after a recent legal issue placed his broadcasting career under intense scrutiny. The former Dallas Cowboys quarterback now faces an indefinite leave of absence while the network evaluates its next steps. Meanwhile, longtime Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has publicly defended his former franchise quarterback and expressed confidence that Romo will overcome another difficult chapter in his life. Authorities arrested Romo last month in Wisconsin on suspicion of operating while intoxicated. According to the Milwaukee County Sheriff’s Office, deputies stopped Romo while he traveled south on Interstate 43. Officers reported that he performed poorly during roadside sobriety tests before they took him into custody. They later booked and released him. Romo has a court appearance scheduled for September 21, and officials continue investigating the incident.
Following the arrest, CBS placed Romo on leave until further notice. The network quickly announced that former NFL star J.J. Watt would temporarily join play-by-play announcer Jim Nantz and reporter Tracy Wolfson on its lead NFL broadcast team. The assignment currently remains temporary, although many fans have supported Watt’s promotion after his early broadcasting success. The uncertainty surrounding Romo’s future has sparked widespread discussion throughout football circles. CBS has invested heavily in Romo since hiring him in 2017. Reports indicate that he still has four years remaining on a contract worth approximately $72 million. Because of that financial commitment, any permanent decision regarding his future could become complicated for both Romo and the network.
