Bees Outlast Spinners 3-1 Behind Strong Pitching, Late Insurance

Friday night at LeLacheur Park before a crowd of 2,503, the Lowell Spinners hosted the New Britain Bees. The Bees, closing in on a playoff spot, enter the stretch 4.5 games behind Vermont for the top spot with nine games to go. As for Lowell, they will need to win games and get plenty of help from the rest of the league.

Caden Smith got the ball for Lowell, making his 11th appearance with a 4.80 ERA across 45 innings pitched. Tommy Conley started for the Bees, making his seventh appearance with a 4.58 ERA in 19.2 IP.

In the fourth, New Britain scored the game’s first run. An error by third baseman Quincy Kerr on a one-hop ground ball by Michael Olender was followed one batter later by a double off the left-field wall from Owen Rich to make it 1-0 Bees. New Britain had a chance to extend its lead in the sixth when two walks got Smith into trouble. A wild pitch moved both runners up, but Olender then hit a ground ball to shortstop against a drawn-in infield. Zander Bratspis made a diving stop to his left, got up, and caught Ben Kuja in a rundown between third and home, with Kuja getting called out for overrunning third base. Smith then struck out the next two hitters to escape the jam. Both starting pitchers exited halfway through: Conley tossed five shutout innings, while Smith went six innings of one-run ball, leaving both bullpens in charge.

In the eighth, New Britain made it 2-0 on an RBI single by Davis Hanson that scored Tyler Garbooshian, who had walked and stolen second base. In the bottom of the eighth against Dylan Swarts, the Spinners cut the lead in half. A David Vanderzouwen single to left was followed by a double down the left-field line by Jack Stead to make it 2-1.

The Bees got the run back in the ninth against Chris Klueber. Following a one-out single to right by Deacon Brown, Brown stole second, moved to third on a wild pitch, and scored on a ground ball up the third-base line that Klueber threw to first for the second out, extending the lead to 3-1. James Fagnant came on to close it out for the Bees. He faced four hitters, allowing one walk before getting pinch-hitter Nic Lembo to pop out to second base, ending the game and securing a 3-1 victory for New Britain.

Manager Kevin Graber liked his team’s effort, saying after the game, “We had good pitching.” He noted there was a defensive hiccup that led to a run and thought Conley was tough on their left-handed hitters. The Spinners had a couple of chances, but they could not get the key hit to change the outcome of the ballgame. On Saturday, Lowell hosts Westfield for a 5:00 p.m. first pitch.
