The Boston College Eagles (1-9, 0-6) will get one more chance to perform in front of the home faithful this Saturday afternoon as they host the high-powered Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets at Alumni Stadium. This game carries extra significance as the program celebrates Senior Day, a special occasion where the players and their parents will be honored. Head Coach O’Brien noted that the team had an event planned for the players and their families on Friday evening ahead of the final home contest.
Another Week, Another Uphill Battle
Last Saturday’s game against SMU was another case of familiar struggles for the Eagles. BC quickly fell into a 10-0 first-quarter hole and played catch-up the rest of the way in a disappointing 45-13 loss. The numbers tell the story: the Mustangs racked up a massive 574 total yards of offense, including 222 yards on the ground. SMU’s T.J. Harden dominated with 130 yards on just 16 carries, while Derrick McFall punched in three rushing touchdowns on 64 yards.
Mustangs QB Kevin Jennings was equally effective through the air, going 16-of-32 for 326 yards, three touchdowns, and one interception. His top targets, Jordan Hudson (5 catches, 104 yards, 1 TD) and Yamir Knight (7 catches, 162 yards, 1 TD), handled the bulk of the receiving work. Adding insult to injury, the SMU defense was relentlessly disruptive, registering eight sacks, two interceptions, and two fumble recoveries.
Quarterback Carousel and a Shot at History
It was a difficult day for Boston College’s quarterbacks, with all three signal-callers on the depth chart getting playing time. Dylan Lonergan was the most productive, completing 25-of-37 passes for 232 yards, one touchdown, and one interception, but he was also sacked four times—highlighting the ongoing struggles of the Eagles’ offensive line.
However, a genuine bright spot and a major storyline for Saturday is the opportunity for wide receiver Lewis Bond to break a significant program record. In his last home game, Bond needs just three catches to surpass Zay Flowers’ record of 200 career receptions, giving fans a chance to witness history despite the team’s struggles.
Georgia Tech: Control Their Destiny
For the No. 16-ranked Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets (8-1, 5-1), Saturday’s matchup is critically important. Despite a recent loss to NC State, Tech is still in control of its fate for a spot in this year’s ACC Championship game. To lock up the division, they must win both Saturday’s game at BC and their regular-season finale against Pittsburgh at home on November 23rd. Their 8-1 start is tied for one of the top-15 starts in program history.
The Yellow Jackets’ offense, led by quarterback Haynes King, has been one of the most potent units in the nation:
- 9th in Total Offense (482.1 yards)
- 13th in Rushing (221 yards)
- 14th in Passing Efficiency (162.18)
- 19th in Scoring (36 points per game)
King, in particular, is an elite dual-threat, as the only player in the country averaging 200 passing yards and 90 rushing yards. The last three players to achieve this unique statistical benchmark all went on to become Heisman Trophy finalists.
On Saturday, Boston College will be aiming for a monumental upset as they seek to accomplish what they have yet to do all year: defeat an FBS opponent and record their first conference win.
